Abstract

A powered surgical apparatus, which is configured to engage tissue includes a handle assembly having proximal and distal portions, a movable portion operatively connected to the distal portion of the handle assembly, a tool assembly operatively coupled to the movable portion, a power source configured to supply electrical power, and a transmission system operatively associated with the power source. The movable portion is movable with respect to the handle assembly. The tool assembly is adapted to engage tissue. The transmission system is configured to transmit electrical power or signals between the handle assembly and the movable portion.

Claims (21)

1. A powered surgical apparatus for engaging tissue, comprising:

a handle assembly having a first motor and proximal and distal portions;

a movable portion operatively connected to the distal portion of the handle assembly, the movable portion being movable with respect to the handle assembly;

a tool assembly adapted to engage tissue, the tool assembly being operatively coupled to the movable portion;

a power source configured to supply electrical power; and

a transmission system configured to transfer electrical power between the handle assembly and the movable portion, the transmission system including a first electronic board disposed in the handle assembly and a second electronic board positioned in the movable portion, the second electronic board including a primary control circuit and a secondary control circuit, wherein the transmission system transmits control signals between the first and second electronic boards, the first electronic board controls the first motor in response to a control signal received from the second electronic board, wherein the movable portion is configured and adapted to rotate about a longitudinal axis defined by the powered surgical apparatus.

2. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission system is configured to transmit electrical power wirelessly between the handle assembly and the movable portion.

3. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic board comprises a motherboard and the second electronic board comprises a daughterboard.

4. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second electronic boards includes a printed circuit board.

5. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission system is configured to transmit feedback between the first and second electronic boards.

6. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission system is configured to transmit sensing signals between the first and second electronic boards.

7. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission system includes an inductive circuit for wirelessly transmitting electrical energy between the first and second electronic boards.

8. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said electrical energy charges a battery.

9. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the movable portion includes conductive rings electrically coupling the first electronic board to the second electronic board.

10. The powered surgical apparatus of claim 9 , wherein each conductive ring has cantilevered contacts adapted to transfer at least one of a signal and electrical power between the first and second electronic boards.

11. A powered surgical apparatus for engaging tissue, comprising:

a handle assembly having a first motor;

a movable portion operatively connected to a distal portion of the handle assembly, the movable portion configured and adapted to rotate about a longitudinal axis defined by the powered surgical apparatus, the movable portion has a second motor;

a tool assembly operatively coupled to the movable portion; and

a transmission system including a first electronic board disposed in the handle assembly and a second electronic board positioned in the movable portion, the second electronic board including a primary control circuit and a secondary control circuit, wherein the transmission system transmits control signals between the first and second electronic boards.

12. The powered surgical apparatus according to claim 11 , herein the first electronic board controls the first motor in response to a control signal received from the second electronic board.
