Virtual communal television viewing
A social networking system enables cable television viewers to watch television programs as a virtual group, each watching within his/her own home, while simultaneously communicating with one another, for example, via voice and/or video chat. The system enables a viewer to find friends, or other like-minded viewers not acquainted with the viewer, for virtual communal viewing parties. The system can enable participants in a viewing party to synchronize viewing sessions enabling each participant to share in a common viewing experience. The system can also enable a system operator to recognize communal viewing groups and enable more effective advertisement targeting.
1. A method of enabling virtual communal television viewing, comprising:
establishing a viewing party comprising a voice conferencing session associated with one or more users associated with a television content;
associating an additional user with the viewing party and with the television content;
synchronizing the television content for the plurality of users associated with the viewing party; and
enabling voice communication between the additional user and the one or more users.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the television content is played on demand and comprises one or more of: a movie and/or a television program.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the television content is recorded on a plurality of digital video recorders (DVRs) controlled by one or more users associated with the viewing party, wherein the DVRs are located at one or more of: user's premises and service providers' premises.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the television content is recorded on a digital video recorder (DVR) controlled by one or more users associated with the viewing party, wherein the DVR is located at a user's premises or a service provider's premises.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronizing is controlled by a single user.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronizing is controlled by two or more users.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronizing further comprises synchronizing playback of the television content, including initiating playback of the television content at approximately the same location in the television content for each user.
8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising synchronizing playback of the television content to each user in response to one of the following commands: pause, rewind, instant replay, skip back, fast forward, skip ahead, play or stop.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronizing further comprises synchronizing viewing of the television content by each user, including one of: verifying that each user is initially tuned to the associated television content, or force-tuning any user not already tuned to the associated television content to that content.
10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising synchronizing viewing of the television content by each user in response to one of the following commands: channel change, pause, rewind, instant replay, skip back, fast forward, skip ahead, play or stop.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the television content comprises an interactive television channel, the method further comprising controlling the interactive television channel responsive to input from one or more users.
12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising accepting a purchase of access to the television content on a pay-per-view basis.
13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the accepting comprises accepting each user separately purchasing access to the television content.
14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the accepting comprises accepting one user purchasing access to the television content on behalf of one or more other users.
15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising discounting a purchase price for the purchase according to a group rate.
16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising synchronizing advertisements delivered to each user in conjunction with the television content.
17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining user characteristics associated with a user, including one or more of an online status, a program title viewed by the user, and/or a channel viewed by the user.
18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising updating a friend list associated with the user to indicate one or more of the user characteristics.
19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting an advertisement to deliver to one or more users based on one or more of: party characteristics associated with the viewing party, and/or user characteristics.
20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising determining a candidate hosting location for the users based on the party characteristics; selecting an advertisement associated with the candidate hosting, location; and delivering the advertisement to the users.
21. The method of claim 19 , further comprising associating user characteristics with a user based on the party characteristics.
22. The method of claim 1 , further comprising notifying the one or more users that the additional user has joined the viewing party.
23. The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating one or users with a private voice communication isolated from the viewing party voice conferencing session.
24. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling voice communication via a device separate from a device used to enable viewing the television content.
25. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling voice communication via a device used to enable viewing the television content.
26. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling voice communication via Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP).
27. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling voice communication via a Bluetooth interface associated with a device used to enable viewing the television content.
28. A system to enable virtual communal television viewing, comprising:
a controller configured to establish a viewing party comprising a voice conferencing session associated with one or more users, and additionally associated with a television content;
wherein the controller is further configured to associate an additional user with the viewing party and with the television content;
wherein the controller is further configured to enable synchronization of the television content for the plurality of users associated with the viewing party; and
a server configured to enable voice communication between the additional user and the one or more users.
29. The system of claim 28 , wherein the television content is played on demand and comprises one or more of: a movie and/or a television program.

The system of claim 28 , further comprising a plurality of digital video recorders (DVRs), wherein the television content is recorded on the DVRs controlled by one or more users associated with the viewing party, wherein the DVRs are located at one or more of: user's premises and service providers' premises.
31. The system of claim 28 , further comprising a digital video recorder (DVR), wherein the television content is recorded on the DVR controlled by one or more users associated with the viewing party, wherein the DVR is located at a user's premises or a service provider's premises.
32. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to enable a single user to control synchronization.
33. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to enable two or more users to control synchronization.
34. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is further configured to synchronize playback of the television content, including initiation of playback of the television content at approximately the same location in the television content for each user.
35. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to synchronize playback of the television content to each user in response to one of the following commands: pause, rewind, instant replay, skip back, fast forward, skip ahead, play or stop.
36. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to synchronize the television content viewed by each user by one of: a verification that each user is initially tuned to the associated television content, or a forced-tune to the associated television content of any user not already tuned to that content.
37. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to synchronize the television content viewed by each user in response to one of the following commands: channel change, pause, rewind, instant replay, skip back, fast forward, skip ahead, play or stop.
38. The system of claim 28 , wherein the television content comprises an interactive television channel, and wherein the controller is configured to control the interactive television channel responsive to input from one or more users.
39. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to accept a purchase of access to the television content on a pay-per-view basis.
40. The system of claim 39 , wherein the controller is configured to accept each user separately purchasing access to the television content.
41. The system of claim 39 , wherein the controller is configured to accept one user purchasing access to the television content on behalf of one or more other users.
42. The system of claim 39 , wherein the controller is configured to discount a purchase price for the purchase according to a group rate.
43. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to deliver synchronized advertisements to each user in conjunction with the television content.
44. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to determine user characteristics associated with a user, including one or more of an online status, a program title viewed by the user, and/or a channel viewed by the user.
45. The system of claim 44 , wherein the controller is configured to update a friend list associated with the user to indicate one or more of the user characteristics.
46. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to select an advertisement to be delivered to one or more users based on one or more of: party characteristics associated with the viewing party, and/or user characteristics.
47. The system of claim 46 , wherein the controller is configured to determine a candidate hosting location for the users based on the party characteristics; wherein the controller is configured to select an advertisement associated with the candidate hosting location; and wherein the controller is configured to deliver the advertisement to the users.
48. The system of claim 46 , wherein the controller is configured to associate user characteristics with a user based on the party characteristics.
49. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to notify the one or more users that the additional user has joined the viewing party.
50. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to associate one or more users with a private voice communication isolated from the viewing party voice conferencing session.
51. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to enable voice communication via a device separate from a device used to enable viewing the television content.
52. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to enable voice communication via a device used to enable viewing the television content.
53. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to enable voice communication via Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP).
54. The system of claim 28 , wherein the controller is configured to enable voice communication via a Bluetooth interface associated with a device used to enable viewing the television content.
