Abstract

A payment card (e.g., credit and/or debit card) or other card or device (e.g., mobile telephone) is provided with a magnetic emulator operable to communicate data to a magnetic stripe read-head. User interfaces are provided in a number of different configurations in order to achieve a number of different functionalities.

Claims (38)

1. A payment card comprising:

a display;

a battery;

a processor;

a communications device operable to communicate information to a card reader; and

a button, wherein said button is located over said communications device in a thickness direction of said card.

2. The payment card of claim 1 , wherein said communications device is a magnetic emulator.

3. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second button, wherein said second button is located over said communications device.

4. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of buttons, wherein said plurality of buttons are located over said communications device.

5. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a read-head detector operable to detect a read-head of a magnetic stripe reader.

6. The payment card of claim 1 , wherein payment data is provided by said communications device and at least a portion of said payment data is displayed on said display.

7. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a memory.

8. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first surface, wherein at least a portion of a payment card number is printed on said first surface, and said display is viewable from said first surface.

9. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a first surface, wherein said display is viewable from said first surface.

10. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second button;

a first source of light; and

a second source of light, wherein said second button is located over said communications device and said first source of light is located within the proximity of said button and said second source of light is located within the proximity of said second button.

11. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of buttons;

a first source of light; and

a plurality of sources of light, wherein said plurality of buttons are located over said communications device and said first source of light is located within the proximity of said button and each of said plurality of sources of light are located within the proximity of a respective each of said plurality of buttons.

12. The payment card of claim 1 , wherein said display is a bi-stable display.

13. A payment card comprising:

a button;

a battery;

a processor;

a communications device operable to communicate information to a card reader; and

a display, wherein said display is located over said communications device in a thickness direction of said card.

14. The payment card of claim 13 , wherein said communications device is a magnetic emulator.

15. The payment card of claim 13 , wherein said button is located within the proximity of said display.

16. The payment card of claim 13 , further comprising a second button, wherein said button and said second button are located within the proximity of said display.

17. The payment card of claim 13 , further comprising a plurality of buttons, wherein said button and said plurality of buttons are located within the proximity of said display.

18. The payment card of claim 13 , further comprising a read-head detector operable to detect a read-head of a magnetic stripe reader.

19. The payment card of claim 13 , wherein payment data is provided by said communications device and at least a portion of said payment data is displayed on said display.

20. The payment card of claim 13 , further comprising:

a first surface, wherein at least a portion of a payment card number is printed on said first surface, and said display is viewable from said first surface.
