Abstract

Techniques and mechanisms relating to a basestation for a cellular communication system, and in particular to a method and a system for determining the location of the basestation, are disclosed. Methods are provided for use in a basestation of a mobile communications network, or in the network itself, for determining information about the position of the basestation itself, and/or for determining the position of mobile devices having a connection to the basestation. According to other aspects of the invention, there are provided basestations and network nodes for performing these methods.

Claims (51)

1. A method of determining whether a small cell basestation in a communications network has changed position, wherein the network operates with separate downlink and uplink frequencies, the method comprising:

at a first time, interrupting transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a first plurality of neighbouring basestations whose transmissions can be detected at the first time, wherein the transmitted signals include cell identities of the first plurality of neighbouring basestations from which the transmitted signals can be detected;

forming a first list of the cell identities of the first plurality of neighbouring basestations;

at a second time, interrupting transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a second plurality of neighbouring basestations whose transmissions can be detected at the second time, wherein the transmitted signals include cell identities of the second plurality of neighbouring basestations from which the transmitted signals can be detected;

forming a second list of the cell identities of the second plurality of neighbouring basestations;

determining whether the small cell basestation has changed position based on the first and second lists of cell identities; and

responsive to a determination that the small cell basestation has changed position, sending an alarm signal to an operator of the communications network.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein:

the step of detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted by the first plurality of neighbouring basestations at the first time comprises identifying, at the base station, the first plurality of neighbouring basestations at the first time;

the step of detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted by the second plurality of neighbouring basestations at the second time comprises identifying, at the base station, the second plurality of neighbouring basestations at the second time; and

the step of determining whether the small cell basestation has changed position comprises determining whether the first plurality of neighbouring basestations identified at the first time is the same as the second plurality of neighbouring basestations identified at the second time.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the first and second plurality of neighbouring basestations each comprise basestations in a plurality of mobile networks.

4. A method of determining whether a position of a small cell basestation in a first cellular communications network has changed, wherein the network operates with separate downlink and uplink frequencies, the method comprising:

interrupting transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a plurality of neighbouring basestations;

detecting a cell identity of each of said plurality of neighbouring basestations;

forming a first list of the cell identities of the neighbouring basestations from which transmitted signals can be detected;

storing the first list; and, at a later time:

interrupting transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a second plurality of neighbouring basestations which are detectable at the second time;

detecting a cell identity of each of said second plurality of neighbouring basestations;

forming a second list of the cell identities of the neighbouring basestations from which transmitted signals can be detected at the second time;

storing the second list; and

determining that a position of the small cell basestation has changed if the second list is not the same as the first list.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4 , further comprising, if it is determined that the position of the small cell basestation has changed:

sending an alarm to the cellular network operator.

6. A method as claimed in claim 4 , further comprising, if it is determined that the position of the small cell basestation has changed:

discontinuing service to the small cell basestation.

7. A method as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the neighbouring basestations include basestations from a plurality of cellular communications networks.

8. A system for determining whether a small cell basestation in a communications network has changed position, wherein the network operates with separate downlink and uplink frequencies, wherein the system comprises a plurality of basestations, and wherein the system is configured to:

at a first time, interrupt transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detect, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a first plurality of neighbouring basestations whose transmissions can be detected at the first time, wherein the transmitted signals include cell identities of the first plurality of neighbouring basestations from which the transmitted signals can be detected;

form a first list of the cell identities of the first plurality of neighbouring basestations;

at a second time, interrupt transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detect, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a second plurality of neighbouring basestations whose transmissions can be detected at the second time, wherein the transmitted signals include cell identities of the second plurality of neighbouring basestations from which the transmitted signals can be detected;

form a second list of the cell identities of the second plurality of neighbouring basestations;

determine whether the small cell basestation has changed position based on the first and second lists of cell identities; and

responsive to a determination that the small cell basestation has changed position, send an alarm signal to an operator of the communications network.

9. A system for determining whether a small cell basestation in a communications network has changed position, wherein the network operates with separate downlink and uplink frequencies, wherein the system comprises a plurality of basestations, and wherein the system is configured to:

interrupt transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detect, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a plurality of neighbouring basestations;

detect a cell identity of each of said plurality of neighbouring basestations;

form a first list of the cell identities of the neighbouring basestations from which transmitted signals can be detected;

store the first list; and, at a later time:

interrupt transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detecting, at the basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a second plurality of neighbouring basestations which are detectable at the second time;

detect a cell identity of each of said second plurality of neighbouring basestations;

form a second list of the cell identities of the neighbouring basestations from which transmitted signals can be detected at the second time;

store the second list; and

determine that a position of the small cell basestation has changed if the second list is not the same as the first list.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second pluralities of neighbouring basestations consist of microcell basestations and/or macrocell basestations.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of interrupting, at a first time, transmissions from the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies and detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted on said downlink frequencies by a first plurality of neighbouring basestations whose transmissions can be detected at the first time comprises:

pausing transmission of signals by the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies;

detecting, at the small cell basestation, signals transmitted by the first plurality of neighbouring basestations on said downlink frequencies; and

resuming transmission of signals by the small cell basestation on said downlink frequencies.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an approximate position of a mobile device having a connection to the small cell basestation.
