Claims (34)

1. A method, comprising:

presenting a media content segment comprising one or more gating segments and one or more protected segments, wherein access to at least a portion of the one or more protected segments is selectively provided based on a predetermined setting associated with the one or more gating segments, the predetermined setting including an expiration of a duration of time associated with a presentation of the one or more gating segments and receipt of a user input after the expiration of the duration of time associated with the presentation of the one or more gating segments;

presenting a user-selectable option during the presentation of the one or more gating segments to change the predetermined setting via the user input; and

modifying a presentation of the media content segment based on the user input.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting the one or more gating segments via a media player application.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting the one or more protected segments of the media content segment via a media player application.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting the user-selectable option to set the predetermined setting prior to presenting the one or more gating segments.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selectively provide access to an additional one of the one or more protected segments in response to presenting an additional gating segment for at least a duration of time.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user-selectable option is selectable via a user-input device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gating segments comprises one or more advertisements.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the one or more gating segments is performed in response to receiving an initial user input.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a user input selection device configured to receive a user input; and

a content rendering device configured to:

present a media content segment comprising one or more gating segments and one or more protected segments, wherein access to at least a portion of the one or more protected segments is selectively provided based on a predetermined setting associated with the one or more gating segments, the predetermined setting including an expiration of a duration of time associated with a presentation of the one or more gating segments and receipt of the user input after the expiration of the duration of time associated with the presentation of the one or more gating segments;

present a user-selectable option during the presentation of the one or more gating segments to change the predetermined setting via the user input; and

modify presentation of the media content segment based on the user input.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is further adapted to present the one or more gating segments via a media player application.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is further adapted to provide the user-selectable option to present the one or more protected segments of the media content segment via a media player application.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is farther adapted to present the user-selectable option to set the predetermined setting prior to presenting the one or more gating segments.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is further adapted to selectively provide access to an additional one of the one or more protected segments in response to presenting an additional gating segment for at least a duration of time.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the one or more protected segments are included in a contiguous media content segment.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the one or more gating segments comprises one or more advertisements.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is further adapted to present the one or more gating segments in response to receiving an initial user input.

17. An article comprising:

a system memory comprising machine-readable instructions stored thereon which, if executed by a special purpose computing apparatus, are adapted to enable the special purpose computing apparatus to:

present a media content segment comprising one or more gating segments and one or more protected segments, wherein access to at least a portion of the one or more protected segments is selectively provided based on a predetermined setting associated with the one or more gating segments, the predetermined setting including an expiration of a duration of time associated with a presentation of the one or more gating segments and receipt of a user input after the expiration of the duration of time associated with the presentation of the one or more gating segments;

present a user-selectable option during the presentation of the one or more gating segments to change the predetermined setting via the user input; and

modify a presentation of the media content segment based on the user input.

18. The article of claim 17 , wherein the machine-readable instructions if executed are further adapted to enable the special purpose computing apparatus to present the one or more gating segments via a media player application.

19. The article of claim 17 , wherein the machine-readable instructions if executed are further adapted to enable the special purpose computing apparatus to present the one or more protected segments via a media player application.

20. The article of claim 17 , wherein the machine-readable instructions if executed are further adapted to enable the special purpose computing apparatus to present the user-selectable option to set the predetermined setting prior to presenting the one or more gating segments.

21. The article of claim 17 , wherein the machine-readable instructions if executed are further adapted to enable the special purpose computing apparatus to selectively provide access to an additional one of the one or more protected segments in response to presenting an additional gating segment for at least a duration of time.

22. The article of claim 17 , wherein the machine-readable instructions if executed are further adapted to enable the special purpose computing apparatus to present the one or more gating segments in response to receiving an initial user input.
