Abstract

Protocol meta-models are made available to a protocol designer. Each protocol meta-model includes a list of preliminary patient eligibility attributes appropriate for a particular disease category. The protocol designer chooses the appropriate meta-model, and encodes the clinical trial protocol, including eligibility and patient workflow, within the selected meta-model. The resulting protocol database is stored together with databases of other protocols in a library of protocol databases. Once a patient is enrolled into a study, the protocol database indicates to a clinician what tasks are to be performed at each patient visit. These tasks can include both patient management tasks and data management tasks.

Claims (47)

1. A method of designing a clinical protocol, the method comprising:

accessing a plurality of protocol meta-models using a computing device, the plurality of protocol meta-models associated with respective diseases;

selecting a protocol meta-model of the plurality of protocol meta-models using the computing device, the protocol meta-model including a set of patient eligibility criteria and a set of workflow actions which are relevant to a disease associated with the protocol meta-model, each patient eligibility criterion of the set of patient eligibility criteria including an attribute associated with the disease and a range of values for the attribute to designate whether the patient eligibility criterion is satisfied; and

generating, by the computing device, an intelligent clinical protocol database, the intelligent clinical protocol database being encoded with one or more of the set of patient eligibility criteria and a protocol schema of one or more of the set of workflow actions.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises selecting a patient eligibility criterion from the set of patient eligibility criteria of the protocol meta-model selected.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the method further comprises assigning one of a value and a sub-range of values from the range of values for the attribute of the patient eligibility criterion selected.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the method further comprises determining one of a number and a percentage of patients that meet the patient eligibility criterion.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the method further comprises revising one of the value and the sub-range of values of the patient eligibility criterion until one of the number and the percentage of patients reaches an accrual threshold.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the method further comprises classifying the patient eligibility criterion selected as one of an inclusion eligibility criterion and an exclusion eligibility criterion.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the method further comprises:

establishing a further patient eligibility criterion in the protocol meta-model selected; and

encoding the intelligent clinical protocol database with the one or more of the set of patient eligibility criteria and the further patient eligibility criterion.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises assigning one of a value and a sub-range of values for an attribute of the further patient eligibility criterion established.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises determining one of a number and a percentage of patients that meet the further patient eligibility criterion.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises revising one of the value and the sub-range of values of the further patient eligibility criterion until one of the number and the percentage of patients reaches an accrual threshold.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises classifying the further patient eligibility criterion established as one of an inclusion eligibility criterion and an exclusion eligibility criterion.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises selecting one or more workflow actions from the set of workflow actions.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises connecting the workflow actions selected.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the method comprises representing the protocol schema graphically as the workflow actions that are connected.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises selecting one or more workflow sub-actions for a workflow action.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the method further comprises connecting the workflow sub-actions selected.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the method further comprises representing graphically the workflow sub-actions that are connected.

18. A system to design a clinical protocol, the system comprising:

a computing device;

a memory device to storing instructions that, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

accessing a plurality of protocol meta-models using a computing device, the plurality of protocol meta-models associated with respective diseases;

selecting a protocol meta-model of the plurality of protocol meta-models using the computing device, the protocol meta-model including a set of patient eligibility criteria and a set of workflow actions which are relevant to a disease associated with the protocol meta-model, each patient eligibility criterion of the set of patient eligibility criteria including an attribute associated with the disease and a range of values for the attribute to designate whether the patient eligibility criterion is satisfied; and

generating an intelligent clinical protocol database using the computing device, the intelligent clinical protocol database being encoded with one or more of the set of patient eligibility criteria and a protocol schema of one or more of the set of workflow actions.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise selecting a patient eligibility criterion from the set of patient eligibility criteria of the protocol meta-model selected.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the operations further comprise assigning one of a value and a sub-range of values from the range of values for the attribute of the patient eligibility criterion selected.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the operations further comprise determining one of a number and a percentage of patients that meet the patient eligibility criterion.

22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the operations further comprise revising one of the value and the sub-range of values of the patient eligibility criterion until one of the number and the percentage of patients reaches an accrual threshold.

23. The system of claim 19 , wherein the operations further comprise classifying the patient eligibility criterion selected as one of an inclusion eligibility criterion and an exclusion eligibility criterion.

24. The system of claim 19 , wherein the operations further comprise:

establishing a further patient eligibility criterion in the protocol meta-model selected; and

encoding the intelligent clinical protocol database with the one or more of the set of patient eligibility criteria and the further patient eligibility criterion.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the operations further comprise assigning one of a value and a sub-range of values for an attribute of the further patient eligibility criterion established.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the operations further comprise determining one of a number and a percentage of patients that meet the further patient eligibility criterion.

27. The system of claim 26 , wherein the operations further comprise revising one of the value and the sub-range of values of the further patient eligibility criterion until one of the number and the percentage of patients reaches an accrual threshold.
