Abstract

We have disclosed a modular personal network (MPN) that includes multiple devices that may be worn, carried, or used in close proximity to a user. The devices communicate wirelessly. Functions of the MPN may be modified by adding or removing components. The MPN may communicate with a personal computer. General purpose devices may include a control unit, a display, a user input, and an audio output. The MPN may provide a variety of functions, including time, communication, entertainment, organization, guidance, athletic, medical, travel, outdoors, identity, security, and military.

Claims (55)

1. A method of providing guidance comprising:

allowing a user to follow a route while wearing or carrying a position monitor comprising a processor and a memory;

the processor logging the position data measured by the position monitor at intervals while following the route;

the processor saving the logged position data in the memory;

the processor using the saved position data for later guidance of the user to follow the route while the user is wearing or carrying the position monitor;

the processor logging orientation data at intervals while following the route;

the processor saving the logged orientation data in the memory; and

the processor using the saved orientation data for later guidance of the user while the user is wearing or carrying the position monitor.

2. A method of providing guidance comprising:

allowing a user to follow a route while wearing or carrying a position monitor comprising a processor and a memory;

the processor logging the position data measured by the position monitor at intervals while following the route;

the processor saving the logged position data in the memory;

the processor using the saved position data for later guidance of the user to follow the route while the user is wearing or carrying the position monitor;

the processor logging speed data at intervals while following the route;

the processor saving the logged speed data in the memory; and

the processor using the saved speed data for later guidance of the user while the user is wearing or carrying the position monitor.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

logging elevation data at intervals while following the route;

saving the logged elevation data; and

using the saved elevation data for later guidance of the user while the user is wearing or carrying the position monitor.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the elevation data is elevation change data.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising downloading map data.

6. The method of claim 2 further comprising uploading the saved position data to a base station or personal computer.

7. The method of claim 2 further comprising allowing the user to annotate the saved position data.

8. The method of claim 2 further comprising allowing the user to modify the saved position data.

9. The method of claim 2 further comprising displaying the saved position data.

10. The method of claim 2 further comprising making the saved position data available over the Internet.

11. The method of claim 2 further comprising recommending a route based on collected position data and a desired workout intensity, difficulty, or elevation profile.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the guidance of the user to follow the route comprises providing a prompt instructing the user to adjust their directional heading.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein the guidance of the user to follow the route comprises providing a prompt instructing the user to adjust their traveling speed.

14. The method of claim 2 , wherein the guidance of the user based on the speed data comprises providing a prompt instructing the user to adjust their traveling speed.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the prompt instructing the user to adjust their traveling speed comprises a visual display.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the prompt instructing the user to adjust their traveling speed comprises an audible output.

17. The method of claim 13 further comprising recommending a route based on a desired workout intensity, difficulty, or elevation profile.

18. A method of providing guidance comprising:

allowing a user to follow a route while wearing or carrying a position monitor comprising a processor and a memory;

the processor logging the position data measured by the position monitor at intervals while following the route;

the processor saving the logged position data in the memory;

the processor logging athletic performance data at intervals while following the route, wherein the athletic performance data comprises one of speed data, pace data, and heart rate data;

the processor saving the logged athletic performance data in the memory;

the processor correlating the saved athletic performance data with the saved position data; and

the processor using the correlated athletic performance data and position data for later guidance of the user while the user is wearing or carrying the position monitor.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

collecting athletic performance data at intervals while following the route on a first occasion;

saving the athletic performance data collected while following the route on the first occasion;

collecting athletic performance data at intervals while following the route on a second occasion;

saving the athletic performance data collected while following the route on the second occasion; and

comparing the saved athletic performance data collected while following the route on the first occasion to the athletic performance data collected while following the route on the second occasion.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein correlating the saved athletic performance data with the saved position data comprises correlating saved athletic performance data logged at a particular point in time with a saved position data logged at the particular point in time.

21. The method of claim 19 , further comprising providing a training recommendation to the user in response to the comparison.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the training recommendation is provided to the user during the second occasion.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the training recommendation comprises an instruction to the user to adjust their traveling speed.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the training recommendation comprises an instruction to the user to adjust their heart rate.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the instruction to the user to adjust their heart rate comprises instructing the user to adjust their traveling speed to result in an adjustment of their heart rate.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein the instruction to the user to adjust their heart rate comprises instructing the user to adjust their activity intensity to result in an adjustment of their heart rate.
