Abstract

An electrophotographic image forming apparatus includes a process cartridge which is mounted on a pull-out type cartridge tray to enable front access. The electrophotographic image forming apparatus includes an urging unit for urging and moving the cartridge tray toward a front of a main assembly of the apparatus and a clocking member for locking the cartridge tray in a proper position so that the cartridge tray is returned back to an outside position of the apparatus when the cartridge tray is pushed to the proper position.

Claims (24)

1. An electrophotographic image forming apparatus comprising:

a tray movable between a outer position in which said tray is outside of a main assembly of said apparatus and an inner position in which said tray is inside of the main assembly of said apparatus, said tray including a mounting portion configured and positioned to detachably mount a cartridge in the outer position, wherein said cartridge includes a developer accommodating portion configured to accommodate a developer;

a portion to be engaged provided to the main assembly of the apparatus,

a regulating member configured and positioned to regulate movement of said tray from the inner position toward the outer position when said tray is located in the inner position, wherein said regulating member is provided to said tray and is engaged with the said portion to be engaged in the state in which said tray is located in the inner position, wherein said regulating member is locatable in a regulating position for regulating movement of said tray from the inner position toward the outer position and a retracted position in which said regulating member is retracted from the regulating position, and

a releasing member configured and positioned to release an engagement between said regulating member and said portion to be engaged, wherein said releasing member is movably provided to said tray,

wherein said regulating member is moved from the regulating position to the retracted position by movement of said releasing member in the state in which said tray is located in the inner position, and tray is movable from the inner position to the outer position when the engagement is released.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said releasing member is provided downstream of said tray with respect to a pull out direction of said tray.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said releasing member is exposed at an upper portion of said tray.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said regulating member is moved from the regulating position to the retracted position by movement of said releasing member from upstream to downstream with respect to a pull out direction of said tray.

5. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the main assembly of said apparatus includes an opening through which said tray passes when said tray moves from the inner position to the outer position, and a door capable of closing the opening in a state in which said tray is located in the inner position.

6. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the main assembly of said apparatus includes a tray supporting member configured and positioned to be moved by opening and closing of said door, and

wherein said tray supporting member supports said tray when said tray is located at the outer position.

7. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein said tray supporting member guides said tray when said tray is moved between the inner position and the outer position.

8. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said cartridge includes a developer carrying member configured and positioned to carry the developer in order to develop a latent image formed on an electrophotographic photosensitive member.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein said cartridge includes said electrophotographic photosensitive member.

10. An apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the main assembly of said apparatus includes a transfer member configured and positioned to transfer a developer image formed on said electrophotographic photosensitive member,

wherein said tray can be located (i) in a transfer contact position in which said electrophotographic photosensitive member and said transfer member contact each other and (ii) a transfer separation position, as the inner position, in which said electrophotographic photosensitive member and said transfer member are separated from each other, and

wherein said tray is moved from the transfer contact position to the transfer separation position by opening of a door.

11. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a moving direction of said tray in which said tray moves between the inner position and the outer position is perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of said cartridge.

12. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a plurality of cartridges are mountable to said mounting portion.

13. An apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein said one of said plurality of cartridges accommodates a black developer.

14. An apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein said tray is capable of supporting a cartridge accommodating a black color developer, a cartridge accommodating a cyan color developer, a cartridge accommodating a magenta color developer, and a cartridge accommodating a yellow color developer.

15. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an urging member configured and positioned to urge said tray toward the outer position when said tray is in the inner position.

16. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said regulating member is urged to the regulating position.
