Use of selenium compounds, especially selenium yeasts for altering cognitive function
The present invention relates to compositions and methods for altering cell function. In particular, the present invention provides compositions comprising selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX) and methods of using the same (e.g., as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment for neurodegenerative disease). Additionally, the present invention demonstrates that specific forms of selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX) possess the ability to alter expression of genes associated with disease and/or aging while other forms of selenium (e.g., selenomethionine) do not.
1. A method of altering the expression of a gene encoding a protein associated with cognitive function in a subject comprising:
selecting a subject displaying signs or symptoms or pathology of a decline in cognitive function;
and administrating an effective amount of composition consisting essentially of a dried, nonviable selenium-enriched yeast wherein the total selenium content of said yeast comprises two percent or less inorganic selenium without antioxidants to said subject wherein the effective amount is 50 to 5000 micrograms of selenium per day and enhances expression of LIM homeobox protein 8 (Lhx8) in said subject compared to a control subject of the same species not administered said composition.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said selecting the subject comprises identifying that the subject displays signs or symptoms or pathology of a decline in cognitive function using a scale selected from the group consisting of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale, the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and the Progressive Deterioration Scale.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is 200 to 500 micrograms per day.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dried, nonviable selenium-enriched yeast is administered orally.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a solid or liquid carrier.
