Abstract

A device for detecting and measuring a change in angular position with respect to a reference plane is useful in surgical procedures for orienting various instruments, prosthesis, and implants with respect to anatomical landmarks. One embodiment of the device uses three orthogonal rate sensors, along with integrators and averagers, to determine angular position changes using rate of change information. A display provides position changes from a reference position. Various alignment guides are useful with surgical instruments to obtain a reference plane.

Claims (28)

1. A surgical instrument for assisting a surgeon in obtaining correct orientation of an acetabular prosthetic socket in a patient's acetabulum, the instrument comprising:

a support device adapted for supporting an acetabular alignment guide; and

an electronic orientation device having a coupler for releasably coupling the electronic orientation device to the support device, wherein the electronic orientation device comprises at least one inertial sensor;

the acetabular alignment guide comprising a base portion and an elongate member configured to pivot and translate relative to the base portion between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein the elongate member has a length sufficient to enable a tip thereof to contact anatomy disposed about the acetabulum at a plurality of discrete, spaced apart locations to align the electronic orientation device with a plane of the acetabulum;

wherein the electronic orientation device is adapted to establish the plane of the acetabulum based upon the position of the at least one inertial sensor when the tip contacts the plurality of spaced apart locations.

2. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the at least one inertial sensor includes a rate sensor that provides a rate signal indicative of a change in angular position of the instrument about an axis.

3. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the at least one inertial sensor includes a first rate sensor, a second rate sensor, and a third rate sensor, each disposed about orthogonal axes.

4. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the electronic orientation device includes a digital display to provide an indication of the change in angular position.

5. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electronic orientation device comprises a display having numeric representations of degrees of alignment.

6. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electronic orientation device is configured to clip onto the support device.

7. The instrument of claim 6 , wherein the electronic orientation device comprises a housing having a receptacle for attachment to the support device.

8. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electronic orientation device communicates to a remotely located digital interface.

9. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electronic orientation device comprises an indicator including a plurality of lights that indicate when an angle has been reached.

10. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electronic orientation device comprises a gauge having a color bar to indicate when an angle has been reached.

11. The instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a computer in wireless communication with the electronic orientation device to provide a combination of data gathering and/or presentation devices.

12. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the acetabular alignment guide comprises three arms configured to engage points about the acetabulum of a hip joint socket.

13. The instrument of claim 12 , wherein the three arms are configured to engage three points simultaneously.

14. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the acetabular alignment guide comprises two arms adapted to contact two points of the acetabulum.

15. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electronic orientation device is a first orientation guide and the instrument further comprises a second orientation guide coupled with the support device.

16. The instrument of claim 15 , wherein the second orientation guide comprises a visual guide spaced away from the support device.

17. The instrument of claim 15 , wherein the second orientation guide comprises an anatomic benchmark guide.

18. A surgical instrument for assisting a surgeon in obtaining correct orientation of an acetabular prosthetic socket in a patient's acetabulum, the instrument comprising:

a support device adapted for supporting an acetabular alignment guide; and

an electronic orientation device having a coupler for releasably coupling the electronic orientation device to the support device, wherein the electronic orientation device comprises at least one inertial sensor;

the acetabular alignment guide comprising a base portion and an elongate member configured to pivot and translate relative to the base portion between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein the elongate member has a length sufficient to enable a tip thereof to contact anatomy disposed about the acetabulum at a plurality of discrete, spaced apart locations to orient the electronic orientation device with respect to the plurality of locations of the acetabulum;

wherein the electronic orientation device is adapted to establish the orientation of a portion of the acetabulum based upon the position of the at least one inertial sensor when the tip contacts the plurality of spaced apart locations.

19. The instrument of claim 18 , wherein the electronic orientation device is a first orientation guide and the instrument further comprises a second orientation guide coupled with the support device.

20. The instrument of claim 19 , wherein the second orientation guide comprises a visual guide spaced away from the support device.
