Abstract

An underdrain filter block for use in draining and backwashing a filtering media in a filter bed includes a top wall, a pair of side walls extending from the top wall, and a bottom wall extending between the pair of side walls. The top wall, the pair of side walls, and the bottom wall define an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion includes a grout chamber having a plurality of openings defined by at least one of the bottom wall and the pair of side walls.

Claims (20)

1. An underdrain filter block for use in draining and backwashing a filtering media in a filter bed, the block comprising:

a top wall;

a pair of side walls extending from the top wall;

a bottom wall extending between the pair of side walls,

wherein the top wall, the pair of side walls, and the bottom wall define an upper portion and a lower portion, the lower portion including a grout chamber having a plurality of openings defined by at least one of the bottom wall and the pair of side walls, a ceiling of the grout chamber defined by an imperforate transverse wall positioned between the top wall and the bottom wall, the imperforate transverse wall extending continuously from one of said side walls to the other of said side walls, the grout chamber configured to receive grout during installation of the underdrain filter block.

2. The underdrain filter block of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion includes a primary chamber and at least one secondary chamber defined by a pair of angularly extending walls.

3. The underdrain filter block of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of ribs generally extending circumferentially along the pair of side walls and the bottom wall.

4. The underdrain filter block of claim 1 , wherein the grout chamber extends the full length of the underdrain filter block.

5. The underdrain filter block of claim 1 , wherein the grout chamber extends only a portion of the full length of the underdrain filter block.

6. The underdrain filter block of claim 1 , wherein the grout chamber is recessed inwardly relative to an outermost portion of the side walls.

7. The underdrain filter block of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion includes a primary chamber and at least one secondary chamber defined by an arched wall.

8. An underdrain filter block for use in draining and backwashing a filtering media in a filter bed, the block comprising:

a top wall;

a pair of side walls extending from the top wall;

a bottom wall extending between the pair of side walls; and

an imperforate transverse wall extending continuously from from one of said pair of side walls to the other of said pair of side walls, the imperforate transverse wall positioned between the top wall and the bottom wall, the bottom wall extending only a portion of a full length of the transverse wall,

wherein the top wall, the pair of side walls, and the bottom wall define an upper portion and a lower portion, the lower portion including a grout chamber having a plurality of openings defined by at least one of the bottom wall and the pair of side walls, the grout chamber defined by the transverse wall, the pair of side walls, and the bottom wall, the grout chamber configured to receive grout during installation of the underdrain filter block.

9. The underdrain filter block of claim 8 , wherein the bottom wall and the pair of side walls each define a plurality of openings in fluid communication with the grout chamber.

10. The underdrain filter block of claim 8 , wherein the grout chamber extends in a longitudinal direction from a first end towards a second end, the grout chamber defining at least one opening that extends in the longitudinal direction of the grout chamber.

11. The underdrain filter block of claim 8 , wherein the upper portion includes a primary chamber and a pair of secondary chambers defined by one of an arched wall and a pair of angularly extending walls.
