Abstract

Gradient coil assemblies for horizontal magnetic resonance imaging systems (MRIs) and methods of their manufacture. Some embodiments may be used with open MRIs and can be used with an instrument placed in the gap of the MRI. In general, concentrations of conductors or radially oriented conductors may be moved away from the gap of the MRI so as to reduce eddy currents that may be induced in any instrument placed within the gap. Systems for directly cooling primary gradient and shield coils may be utilized and various coil supporting structures may be used to assist in coil alignment or to facilitate use of an instrument in the MRI gap.

Claims (36)

1. A self-shielded gradient coil assembly for a horizontal open magnetic resonance imaging system (MRI) used in conjunction with an instrument, the open MRI having a longitudinal axis and a first magnet and a second magnet separated by a gap, the instrument being located within a portion of the gap, the gradient coil assembly comprising:

a supporting structure having a first supporting structure portion and a second supporting structure portion, the first supporting structure portion mounted inside of the first magnet and the second supporting structure portion mounted inside of the second magnet;

a plurality of shielding coils disposed within each supporting structure portion;

a plurality of primary gradient coils disposed within each supporting structure portion between the plurality of shielding coils and the longitudinal axis; and

electrical connections between the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils arranged so that the electrical connections are located a sufficient distance from the gap to reduce eddy currents induced in the instrument,

wherein the plurality of shielding coils and the plurality of primary gradient coils are arranged so that a first concentration of the shielding coils and the primary gradient coils in a first section near the gap is less than a second concentration of the shielding coils and the primary gradient coils in a second section, and

wherein the first section is disposed between the gap and the second section.

2. The gradient coil assembly of claim 1 , wherein the electrical connections between the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils are located at least 5 centimeters from the gap.

3. The gradient coil assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the primary gradient coils is formed as substantially cylindrical conductors about the longitudinal axis.

4. The gradient coil assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the primary gradient coils is directly cooled.

5. The gradient coil assembly of claim 4 , wherein each of the primary gradient coils comprises a hollow conductor.

6. The gradient coil assembly of claim 5 , further comprising a first cooling unit connected to a first end of the MRI and a second cooling unit connected to a second end of the MRI.

7. The gradient coil assembly of claim 1 , wherein the MRI has outer ends and,

wherein the electrical connections between the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils are located substantially at the outer ends of the MRI.

8. The gradient coil assembly of claim 1 , wherein the MRI has outer ends and gap-facing ends, and

wherein each supporting structure portion is mounted at both the outer ends and the gap-facing ends of the MRI.

9. A self-shielded gradient coil assembly for a horizontal open magnetic resonance imaging system (MRI), the open MRI having a longitudinal axis and a first magnet and a second magnet separated by a gap, the gradient coil assembly comprising:

a supporting structure having a first supporting structure portion and a second supporting structure portion, the first supporting structure portion mounted inside of the first magnet and the second supporting structure portion mounted inside of the second magnet;

a plurality of shielding coils disposed within each supporting structure portion, the plurality of shielding coils formed as substantially cylindrical conductors about the longitudinal axis;

a plurality of primary gradient coils disposed within each supporting structure portion between the plurality of shielding coils and the longitudinal axis, the plurality of primary gradient coils formed as substantially cylindrical conductors about the longitudinal axis; and

connecting conductors between the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils,

wherein the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils are arranged so that a first concentration of the shielding coils and the primary gradient coils in a first section near the gap is less than a second concentration of the shielding coils and the primary gradient coils in a second section, and

wherein the first section is disposed between the gap and the second section.

10. The gradient coil assembly of claim 9 , wherein each of the primary gradient coils comprises a directly cooled hollow conductor.

11. The gradient coil assembly of claim 9 , wherein the MRI has outer ends, and

wherein the connecting conductors between the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils are located substantially at the outer ends of the MRI.

12. The gradient coil assembly of claim 9 , wherein the MRI has outer ends and gap-facing ends, and

wherein each supporting structure portion is mounted at both the outer ends and the gap-facing ends of the MRI.

13. A self-shielded gradient coil assembly for a horizontal open magnetic resonance imaging system (MRI), the open MRI having a longitudinal axis and a first magnet and a second magnet separated by a gap, the gradient coil assembly comprising:

a supporting structure having a first supporting structure portion and a second supporting structure portion, the first supporting structure portion mounted inside of the first magnet and the second supporting structure portion mounted inside of the second magnet;

a plurality of shielding coils disposed within each supporting structure portion;

a plurality of primary gradient coils disposed within each supporting structure portion between the plurality of shielding coils and the longitudinal axis; and

electrical connections between the plurality of primary gradient coils and the plurality of shielding coils located at least 5 centimeters from the gap,

wherein each of the primary gradient coils comprises a directly cooled hollow conductor, and

wherein the plurality of shielding coils and the plurality of primary gradient coils are arranged so that a first concentration of the shielding coils and the primary gradient coils in a first section near the gap is less than a second concentration of the shielding coils and the primary gradient coils in a second section, and

wherein the first section is disposed between the gap and the second section.
