Abstract

Effective atomic numbers associated with pixels in a region are received. An effective atomic number is associated with each pixel in the region. X-ray data for the region is received, and an item within the region is identified from the x-ray data. Some of the pixels in the region are correlated with the item such that the item is associated with an effective atomic number. An image of the region is rendered. The pixels of the item have a display style based on the effective atomic number of the item.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

measuring a first effective atomic number associated with a first object;

measuring a second effective atomic number associated with a second object, the first object overlapping at least a portion of the second object; and

presenting an image, wherein a pixel associated with the overlapping of at least the portion of the second object by the first object has a display style that is based on the measured first effective atomic number.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display style comprises a color.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the image comprises a dual-energy x-ray image and the color of a particular display style is based on effective atomic number such that the displayed color of the first object in the image remains substantially the same when material is positioned in front of or behind the first object.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image comprises a first pixel associated with the first object having a first display style and a second pixel associated with the second object having a second display style.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first display style comprises a color, and the second display style comprises a color that is different from the color of the first display style.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying the first object in the image and the second object in the image.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising identifying a third object, the third object being associated with a third effective atomic number that is lower than the second effective atomic number, and the third object being at least partially covered by the second object.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the presented image comprises a representation of the entire third object.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving an indication of a range of effective atomic numbers of interest.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the image presented includes only representations of objects that are associated with an effective atomic number that is within the indicated range.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting an interactive interface for manipulating at least one visual feature of the image.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium encoded with a computer program comprising instructions that, when executed, operate to cause a computer to perform operations comprising:

measuring a first effective atomic number associated with a first object;

measuring a second effective atomic number associated with a second object, the first object overlapping at least a portion of the second object; and

presenting an image, wherein a pixel associated with the overlapping of at least the portion of the second object by the first object has a display style that is based on the measured first effective atomic number.

13. The medium of claim 12 , wherein the display style comprises a color.

14. The medium of claim 13 , wherein the image comprises a dual-energy x-ray image and the color of a particular display style is based on effective atomic number such that the displayed color of the first object in the image remains substantially the same when material is positioned in front of or behind the first object.

15. The medium of claim 12 , wherein the image comprises a first pixel associated with the first object having a first display style and a second pixel associated with the second object having a second display style.

16. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the first display style comprises a color, and the second display style comprises a color that is different from the color of the first display style.

17. A system comprising:

one or more computers and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

receive effective atomic numbers associated with pixels in a region;

identify a first item within the region and a second item within the region;

correlate at least one of the pixels in the region with the first item such that the first item is associated with a first effective atomic number;

correlate at least one of the pixels in the region with the second item such that the second item is associated with a second effective atomic number; and

a display configured to render an image of the region, the at least one pixel of the first item being associated with an overlap of at least a portion of the first item by at least a portion of the second item and having a first display style associated with the first effective atomic number, and the at least one pixel of the second item having a second display style associated with the second effective atomic number.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising an opening to the region configured to receive a cargo carried by a motorized vehicle.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the first item covers at least part of a third item and the first item covers at least part of the second item.

20. The system of claim 17 , further comprising:

a source of penetrating radiation that is directed towards the region; and

a sensor configured to detect the penetrating radiation,

wherein the penetrating region comprises x-rays of at least two energies.
