Abstract

A method of producing and distributing printed product applies aqueous solution to a print medium to define non-image and image areas of the print medium, and contacts the non-image area and the image area with ink. Ink is transferred substantially only to the image area of the print medium to produce the printed product. The printed product is distributed to an end user.

Claims (43)

1. A method of producing and distributing a printed product, the method comprising the steps of:

selectively applying aqueous solution to a surface of a print medium to define non-image and image areas of the surface, wherein the non-image and image areas of the surface are undefined until application of the aqueous solution thereto;

contacting the non-image area having aqueous solution thereon and the image area with ink whereby ink is transferred substantially only to the image area of the print medium to produce the printed product, wherein the aqueous solution substantially blocks transfer of the ink to the non-image area; and

distributing the printed product to an and user, wherein the printed product comprises the print medium having ink thereon.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including the steps of:

applying the aqueous solution to a further print medium to define a further non-image area and a further image area of the further print medium;

contacting the further non-image area and the further image area with ink whereby ink is transferred substantially only to the further image area of the further print medium to produce a further printed product; and

distributing the further printed product to an end user.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the printed product and further printed product have images printed thereon that are substantially identical.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the printed product and further printed product have images printed thereon that are not substantially identical.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the print medium and the further print medium are obtained from a single web.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the single web comprises paper.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein each of the print medium and the further print medium comprises a sheet of material.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein each sheet of material comprises a sheet of paper.

The method of claim 2 , further comprising transporting the print medium and wherein at least one of the steps of applying the aqueous solution to the further print medium and contacting the further non-image area and the further image area with ink is undertaken immediately after at least one of the steps of applying aqueous solution to the surface of the print medium and contacting the non-image and image areas with ink without interrupting transport of the print medium.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein each of the step of applying aqueous solution to the surface of the print medium and the step of applying aqueous solution to the further print medium further includes the step of operating a jet system.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein each operating step includes the step of operating a plurality of ink jet heads in accordance with image data.

12. A method of producing and distributing first and second printed paper products, wherein the production is undertaken by continuously operating a printing press, the method comprising the steps of:

operating the printing press during a first period of time to produce the first printed paper product including the steps of

selectively applying aqueous solution to a surface of a second print medium to define a first non-image area and a first image area thereon, and

contacting the first non-image area and the first image area with ink whereby the ink is transferred substantially only to the first image area of the first print medium to produce the first printed paper product;

operating the printing press during a second period of time immediately following the first period of time to produce the second printed paper product including the steps of

selectively applying aqueous solution to a surface of a second print medium to define a second non-image area and a second image area thereon, and

contacting the second non-image area and the second image area with the ink whereby the ink is transferred substantially only to the second image area of the second print medium to produce the second printed paper product; and

distributing the first and second printed paper products, wherein the first and second paper products comprise the first and second print media having ink thereon, respectively, wherein the first non-image area, the first image area, the second-non-image area, and the second image area of the surface are undefined until the aqueous solution is applied to the surface, and the aqueous solution substantially blocks transfer of the ink to the first non-image area and the second non-image area.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second print media are obtained from a single web of paper.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second print media comprise first and second sheets of paper, respectively.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second printed paper products are substantially identical.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second printed paper products are not substantially identical.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein each of the step of applying aqueous solution to the first print medium and the step of applying aqueous solution to the second print medium includes the step of operating a jet system.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein each operating step includes the step of operating a plurality of ink jet heads in accordance with image data.

19. A method of producing and distributing a printed product, the method comprising the steps of:

selectively applying aqueous solution to a print medium, wherein the aqueous solution alone defines non-image and image areas of the print medium;

contacting the non-image area having aqueous solution therein and the image area with ink whereby ink is transferred substantially only to the image area of the print medium to produce the printed product, wherein the aqueous solution substantially blocks transfer of the ink to the non-image area; and

distributing the printed product to an end user, wherein the printed product comprises the print medium having ink thereon.

20. A method of producing and distributing a printed product, the method comprising the steps of:

selectively applying a single aqueous solution to a print medium, wherein the single aqueous solution defines non-image and image areas of the print medium;

contacting the non-image area having aqueous solution therein and the image area with ink whereby ink is transferred substantially only to the image area of the print medium to produce the printed product, wherein the aqueous solution substantially blocks transfer of the ink to the non-image area; and

distributing the printed product to an end user, wherein the printed product comprises the print medium having ink thereon.

21. A method of producing and distributing a printed product, the method comprising the steps of:

applying individually controlled drops of an aqueous solution to a print medium, wherein the aqueous solution defines non-image and image areas of the print medium;

contacting the non-image area having aqueous solution therein and the image area with ink whereby ink is transferred substantially only to the image area of the print medium to produce the printed product, wherein the aqueous solution substantially blocks transfer of the ink to the non-image area; and

distributing the printed product to an end user, wherein the printed product comprises the print medium having ink thereon.
