Abstract

Sinusitis, enlarged nasal turbinates, tumors, infections, hearing disorders, allergic conditions, facial fractures and other disorders of the ear, nose and throat are diagnosed and/or treated using minimally invasive approaches and, in many cases, flexible catheters as opposed to instruments having rigid shafts. Various diagnostic procedures and devices are used to perform imaging studies, mucus flow studies, air/gas flow studies, anatomic dimension studies, endoscopic studies and transillumination studies. Access and occluder devices may be used to establish fluid tight seals in the anterior or posterior nasal cavities/nasopharynx and to facilitate insertion of working devices (e.g., scopes, guidewires, catheters, tissue cutting or remodeling devices, electrosurgical devices, energy emitting devices, devices for injecting diagnostic or therapeutic agents, devices for implanting devices such as stents, substance eluting devices, substance delivery implants, etc.

Claims (22)

1. A system comprising:

(a) a light emitting wire having a proximal end, a distal end, and a light emitting portion at or near the distal end, wherein the light emitting portion is configured to pass into a paranasal sinus;

(b) a guide catheter configured to facilitate advancement of the light emitting portion of the light emitting wire into the paranasal sinus, wherein the light emitting wire is passable through the guide catheter; and

(c) a flexible catheter passable over the light emitting wire;

wherein the light emitting wire and the flexible catheter are configured and operable such that a distal end of the flexible catheter is positionable proximal to a distal end of the light emitting wire while the light emitting wire is disposed in the flexible catheter, such that the distal end of the light emitting wire is distal to the distal end of the flexible catheter;

wherein the light emitting wire is operable to emit light of a character such that emitted light is directly observable exterior of a patient's anatomy through tissue overlaying the paranasal sinus.

2. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the flexible catheter is passable over the light emitting wire through the guide catheter.

3. A system as in claim 1 , further comprising a paranasal sinus ostium enlargement device.

4. A system as in claim 1 , further comprising an endoscope.

5. A system as in claim 4 , wherein the endoscope comprises a flexible endoscope.

6. A system as in claim 5 , further comprising an articulation member coupled with the endoscope to cause a distal, flexible portion of the endoscope to articulate.

7. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the guide catheter defines a first lumen, wherein the flexible catheter is configured to slide through the first lumen, wherein the flexible catheter defines a second lumen.

8. A system as in claim 7 , wherein the flexible guidewire is configured to slide through the second lumen.

9. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the flexible catheter includes an inflatable feature operable to transition between a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein the inflatable feature is configured to be inserted within a sinus ostium in the first configuration, wherein the inflatable feature is configured to dilate the sinus ostium in the second configuration.

10. A system comprising:

(a) a light emitting wire having a proximal end, a distal end, and a light emitting portion at or near the distal end, wherein the light emitting portion is configured to pass into a paranasal sinus;

(b) a guide catheter configured to facilitate advancement of the light emitting portion of the light emitting wire into the paranasal sinus, wherein the light emitting wire is passable through the guide catheter; and

(c) a flexible catheter passable over the light emitting wire from a proximal position to a distal position, wherein the flexible catheter defines a distal opening, wherein the light emitting wire is configured and operable to pass through the distal opening of the flexible catheter.

11. A system comprising:

(a) a light emitting wire having a proximal end, a distal end, and a light emitting portion at or near the distal end, wherein the light emitting portion is configured to pass into a paranasal sinus;

(b) a guide catheter configured to facilitate advancement of the light emitting portion of the light emitting wire into the paranasal sinus; and

(c) a flexible catheter, wherein the flexible catheter is configured and operable to pass over the light emitting wire from a proximal position to a distal position, wherein the flexible catheter is further configured and operable to pass through the guide catheter.
