Abstract

A payment card (e.g., credit and/or debit card) is provided with a magnetic emulator operable to act as a magnetic stripe read-head detector and a data transmitter. A multiple layer flexible PCB may be fabricated to include multiple magnetic emulators. An emulator may include a coil that includes magnetic, ferromagnetic, or ferromagnetic, material in the coil's interior. Coils may be associated with zones. As a read-head is detected to move from zone-to-zone, coils may be activated to transmit information in those zones.

Claims (24)

1. A system comprising:

a device without a magnetic stripe, said device including a magnetic emulator,

wherein said magnetic emulator is operable to electrically couple, and communicate data to, a read-head located on a magnetic stripe reader,

said magnetic emulator includes a magnetic material located in the interior of a coil, and

at least a portion of a printed circuit board is between a plurality of portions of said coil.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a material located between at least a portion of said magnetic material and at least a portion of said coil.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said magnetic material is rectangular.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said magnetic material is cylindrical.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a read-head detector for detecting said read-head.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a plurality of read-head detectors for detecting said read-head.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a battery.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises an RFID.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises an IC chip.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a processor.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a button.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a display.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein said printed circuit board is a flexible printed circuit board.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein said printed circuit board is a multiple layer printed circuit board.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein said printed circuit board is a flexible multiple layer printed circuit board.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a second magnetic emulator.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a second magnetic emulator and a third magnetic emulator.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a battery and a processor.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a battery, a processor, and a plurality of read-head detectors.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein said magnetic material is multiple pieces of a magnetic material.
