Abstract

An electronic smoking article includes a liquid supply including liquid material, a heater operable to heat the liquid material to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid material and form an aerosol, a wick in communication with the liquid material and in communication with the heater such that the wick delivers the liquid material to the heater, at least one air inlet operable to deliver air to a central air passage upstream of the heater, and a fibrous element downstream of the heater.

Claims (50)

1. An electronic smoking article comprising:

an outer tube extending in a longitudinal direction;

an inner tube within the outer tube;

a liquid supply comprising a nicotine-free liquid material, the liquid supply contained in an outer annulus between the outer tube and the inner tube;

a heater located in the inner tube;

a wick in communication with the liquid supply and surrounded by the heater such that the wick delivers liquid material to the heater and the heater heats the liquid material to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid material and form a nicotine-free aerosol in the inner tube; and

a fibrous element located downstream of the heater and including nicotine dispersed in the fibrous element, such that the aerosol picks up nicotine as the aerosol passes through the fibrous element.

2. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , further including a mouth end insert, said mouth end insert comprising at least two diverging outlet passages operable to distribute aerosol throughout a mouth of a smoker during a puff.

3. The electronic smoking article of claim 2 , wherein each of the at least two diverging outlet passages is angled at about 5° to about 60° in relation to a longitudinal axis of the electronic smoking article.

4. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous element comprises a low efficiency filter material.

5. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous element comprises fibrous material selected from the group consisting of cellulose acetate, polyester, polypropylene, paper, and combinations thereof.

6. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additive dispersed in the fibrous element, the at least one additive selected from the group consisting of flavor materials, aromatic materials, pH modifying agents, chemesthesis agents, carbon dioxide formers, smoke modifiers, diluents, and combinations thereof.

7. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous element has a length ranging from about 3 mm to about 10 mm.

8. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the fibrous element comprises an upstream plug of fibrous material, a downstream plug of fibrous material, and a space therebetween.

9. The electronic smoking article of claim 8 , wherein at least one additive is contained in the space.

10. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous element is detachable.

11. The electronic smoking article of claim 10 , wherein the fibrous element includes a sleeve that is attachable to a mouthend of the outer tube.

12. The electronic smoking article of claim 10 , wherein the electronic smoking article is an electronic cigarette including a recess at a mouth end and the fibrous element is insertable therein.

13. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous element has a coating thereon.

14. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of caffeine, denatonium benzoate, theobromine, quinine, naringin, citric acid, malid acid, succininc acid, tartaric acid, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sucrose, fructose, sucralose, saccharin, monosodium glutamate, gamma-glutamyl petides, medium chain triglycerides, triacetin, neobee, tannic acid, and combinations thereof.

15. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the chemesthesis agent is selected from the group consisting of capsaicin, piperine, alpha-hydroxy-sanshoool, (8)-gingerole, menthol, menthyl lactate and combinations thereof.

16. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the pH modifying agent is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, malic acid, lactic acid, hydrochloric acid and combinations thereof.

17. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , further including at least one absorbent, and the absorbent is selected from the group consisting of activated carbon, silica gel and combinations thereof.

18. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , further comprising an aerosol former selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, glycerin and combinations thereof.

19. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the carbon dioxide formers are selected from the group consisting of sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and combinations thereof.

20. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the additive is included in the fibrous element in an amount ranging from about 0.05 mg to about 100 mg.

21. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the electronic smoking article comprises a first section attachable to a second section and wherein the wick, the liquid supply and fibrous element are contained in the first section and a power supply is operable to apply voltage across the heater contained in the second section.

22. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the electronic smoking article comprises a single outer tube and wherein the wick, the liquid supply, the fibrous element, the heater and a power supply are contained in the outer tube.

23. The electronic smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the at least one additive is dispersed substantially uniformly throughout the fibrous element.

24. An electronic smoking article kit, the kit comprising:

(a) an electronic smoking article, the electronic smoking article comprising:

an outer tube extending in a longitudinal direction;

an inner tube within the outer tube;

a liquid supply comprising a nicotine-free liquid material, the liquid supply contained in an outer annulus between the outer tube and the inner tube;

a heater located in the inner tube; and

a wick in communication with the liquid supply and surrounded by the heater such that the wick delivers liquid material to the heater and the heater heats the liquid material to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid material and form a nicotine-free aerosol in the inner tube; and

(b) a plurality of detachable fibrous elements, each detachable fibrous element comprising nicotine dispersed in each of the fibrous elements, such that the aerosol picks up nicotine as the aerosol passes through each of the fibrous elements.

25. The electronic smoking kit of claim 24 , further including at least one additive dispersed in the fibrous element, the at least one additive selected from the group consisting of flavor materials, aromatic materials, pH modifying agents, chemesthesis agents, carbon dioxide formers, smoke modifiers, diluents, and combinations thereof.
