Abstract

An image scanner section is disposed above a printer section. The image scanner section is supported by the printer section in such a manner as to be pivotable about a pivotal axis. The printer section has a lower housing having a substantially rectangular shape as viewed from above. The image scanner section has an upper housing having a substantially rectangular shape as viewed from above. The upper housing and the lower housing are configured such that a second upper corner portion, which is a corner portion of the upper housing, projects beyond a second lower corner portion, which is a corner portion of the lower housing and is located just under the second upper corner portion.

Claims (76)

1. An image forming apparatus comprising:

a lower housing comprising:

an upper surface,

a front end,

an image forming unit configured to form an image on a sheet, and

a tray disposed on the upper surface of the lower housing, and

an upper housing disposed over the lower housing, and comprising:

a rear portion of the upper housing being coupled to a rear portion of the lower housing in such a manner as to be pivotable about an axis extending along a first direction between a closed position and an open position, and

a front end including a first corner portion and a second corner portion,

wherein a distance between the front end of the upper housing and the front end of the lower housing increases while the upper housing pivotably moves from the closed position to the open position,

wherein the lower housing further comprises:

a first side support portion disposed on a first side of the tray in the first direction and extending upward, the first side support portion including a front surface, and

a second side support portion disposed on a second side of the tray in the first direction and extending upward, the second side support portion including a front surface,

wherein the first corner portion is disposed on a side of the upper housing, which is closest to the first side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein the second corner portion is disposed on a side of the upper housing, which is closest to the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein, when the upper housing is in the closed position, the first corner portion is separated from the front end of the lower housing by a distance including a height of the first side support portion and the second corner portion is separated from the front end of the lower housing by a distance including a height of the second side support portion, and

wherein a distance between the front surface of the second side support portion and a rear end of the lower housing is smaller than a distance between the front surface of the first side support portion and the rear end of the lower housing.

2. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 1 , wherein

the upper housing further comprises an image scanner configured to read an image from a document, and

the image scanner is disposed inside the upper housing.

3. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 2 , wherein

the upper housing further comprises an automatic document feeder configured to feed a document toward the image scanner, and

the automatic document feeder is disposed in a position nearer to the second side support portion than the first side support portion.

4. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 1 , wherein

the image forming unit is configured to discharge the sheet on the tray in a second direction, and

the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction.

5. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 1 , wherein the second corner portion of the upper housing projects beyond the second side support portion.

6. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 1 , wherein the upper housing further comprises a front operation section disposed in the front end of the upper housing apart from the axis, the front operation section configured to receive input from a user.

7. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 6 , wherein the front operation section further comprises a plurality of switches and a display.

8. An image-forming apparatus comprising:

a lower housing having an upper surface and a front end; and

an upper housing disposed over the lower housing and pivotable about an axis extending along a first direction between a closed position and an open position, the upper housing comprising a front end including a first corner portion and a second corner portion,

the lower housing further comprising:

a first side support portion extending along a first side of the upper surface of the lower housing in such a manner as to support the upper housing from underneath and having a front surface,

a second side support portion located on a second side of the upper surface of the lower housing in such a manner as to support the upper housing from underneath and having a front surface, and

a tray formed on the upper surface of the lower housing between the first side support portion and the second side support portion,

wherein the first corner portion is disposed on a side of the upper housing, which is closest to the first side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein the second corner portion is disposed on a side of the upper housing, which is closest to the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein, when the upper housing is in the closed position, the first corner portion is separated from the front end of the lower housing by a distance including a height of the first side support portion and the second corner portion is separated from the front end of the lower housing by a distance including a height of the second side support portion,

wherein the upper housing covers the tray from above when the upper housing is in the closed position, and

wherein a distance from the front surface of the second side support portion to the axis is smaller than a distance from the front surface of the first side support portion to the axis.

9. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 8 , wherein

the upper housing further comprises an image scanner configured to read an image from a document, and

an image reading device is disposed in the upper housing.

10. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 9 , wherein

the upper housing further comprises an automatic document feeder configured to feed a document toward the image scanner, and

the automatic document feeder is located in a position nearer to the first side support portion than the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position.

11. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 8 , wherein

the lower housing comprises an image forming unit configured to form an image on a sheet and discharge the sheet on the tray in a second direction, and

the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction.

12. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 8 , wherein the second corner portion of the upper housing projects beyond the second side support portion.

13. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 8 , wherein the upper housing further comprises a front operation section disposed in the front end of the upper housing apart from the axis, the front operation section configured to receive input from a user.

14. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 13 , wherein the front operation section further comprises a plurality of switches and a display.

15. An image-forming apparatus comprising:

a lower housing having an upper portion and a front end; and

an upper housing disposed over the lower housing, and comprising:

a rear portion of the upper housing being coupled to a rear portion of the lower housing movable between a closed position and an open position, and

a front end including a first corner portion and a second corner portion,

the lower housing comprising:

a first side support portion located on a first side of an upper portion of the lower housing, the first side support portion including a front surface,

a second side support portion located on a second side of the upper portion of the lower housing, the second side support portion including a front surface, and

a tray formed on the upper portion of the lower housing between the first side support portion and the second side support portion,

wherein the upper housing is supported by at least one of the first side support portion and the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein the first corner portion is disposed on a side of the upper housing, which is closest to the first side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein the second corner portion is disposed on a side of the upper housing, which is closest to the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position,

wherein, when the upper housing is in the closed position, the first corner portion is separated from the front end of the lower housing by a distance including a height of the first side support portion and the second corner portion is separated from the front end of the lower housing by a distance including a height of the second side support portion, and

wherein a first distance from the front end of the upper housing to the front surface of the first side support portion is smaller than a second distance from the front end of the upper housing to the front surface of the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position.

16. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 15 , wherein

the upper housing further comprises an image scanner configured to read an image from a document, and

an image reading device is disposed in the upper housing.

17. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 16 , wherein

the upper housing further comprises an automatic document feeder configured to feed a document toward the image scanner, and

the automatic document feeder is located in a position nearer to the first side support portion than the second side support portion when the upper housing is in the closed position.

18. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 15 , wherein the second corner portion of the upper housing projects beyond the second side support portion.

19. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 15 , wherein the upper housing further comprises a front operation section disposed in the front end of the upper housing, the front operation section configured to receive input from a user.

20. The image forming apparatus according to the claim 19 , wherein the front operation section further comprises a plurality of switches and a display.
