Abstract

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

Claims (15)

1. A transcutaneous system for measuring an analyte concentration in a host, the system comprising:

a mounting unit configured for placement and adherence to a skin of a host prior to sensor use, wherein the mounting unit is configured to receive an electronics unit, wherein the mounting unit comprises a hinge that allows the mounting unit to pivot between a first position configured for sensor insertion and a second position configured for sensor use; and

an analyte sensor configured for transcutaneous placement through a skin of a host, wherein the sensor is configured to extend from the mounting unit into the host.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mounting unit comprises an introducer configured to insert the sensor into the host.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the mounting unit is configured to retain the introducer therein during sensor use.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the introducer is configured to insert the sensor into the host at an angle that is not perpendicular to a base portion of the mounting unit.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the insertion angle is from about 30 to about 60 degrees with respect to a base portion of the mounting unit.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electronics unit is configured to releasably mate with the mounting unit.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a distal end, wherein the distal end is configured to measure the analyte concentration in interstitial fluid.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second position corresponds to a lower profile for the mounting unit than the first position.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein in the second position the sensor is configured to bend such that motion within the mounting unit does not substantially translate to movement in an in vivo portion of the sensor.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mounting unit comprises an adhesive pad disposed at a base portion of the mounting unit, wherein the adhesive pad is configured to adhere the mounting unit to the skin.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises an electrochemical sensor.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a non-enzymatic sensor.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor extends into the host at an angle that is not perpendicular to a base portion of the mounting unit.
