Abstract

An article includes a film and a non-woven having fibers, and an embossed seal joining a portion of the film and the non-woven. The seal includes discrete extended elements formed in the film and surrounded by lands in the film. The discrete extended elements having open proximal ends, open or closed distal ends, and sidewalls disposed between the proximal and distal ends, and portions of the discrete extended elements having a thickness less than that of the lands. Fibers of the non-woven are embedded in at least one of the lands and in the sidewalls of the discrete extended elements through the open proximal ends.

Claims (22)

1. A package comprising:

a film and a non-woven, the non-woven comprising fibers; and

a separable, non-melt fused embossed seal joining a portion of the film and the non-woven, the embossed seal comprising a plurality of discrete extended elements formed in the film and surrounded by lands in the film, the plurality of discrete extended elements having open proximal ends, closed distal ends, and sidewalls disposed between the proximal and distal ends, and portions of the plurality of discrete extended elements having a thickness less than that of the lands, wherein at least one of the distal ends and sidewalls of the discrete extended elements are thinned by at least about 25% relative to the lands, wherein the fibers of the non-woven are embedded in at least one of the lands and the sidewalls of the plurality of discrete extended elements through the open proximal ends, wherein an area density of the plurality of discrete extended elements is from about 240 to about 10,000 per square centimeter,

wherein no adhesives are disposed between the film and the non-woven, and

wherein the embossed seal before being broken secures an absorbent article within the package.

2. The package of claim 1 , wherein the non-woven is disposed on a side of the film containing the open proximal ends of the discrete extended elements.

3. The package of claim 1 , wherein the non-woven is disposed on a side of the film containing the closed distal ends of the discrete extended elements.

4. The package of claim 1 , wherein the film has a thickness of about 5 microns to about 150 microns.

5. The package of claim 1 , wherein the non-woven has a basis weight of about 8 gsm to about 50 gsm.

6. The package of claim 1 , wherein the fibers of the non-woven have a diameter of about 0.1 microns to about 50 microns.

7. The package of claim 1 , wherein the discrete extended elements have a height at least substantially equal to a thickness of the film.

8. A package comprising:

a film and a non-woven, the non-woven comprising fibers; and

a separable, non-melt fused embossed seal joining a portion of the film and the non-woven, the embossed seal comprising a plurality of discrete extended elements formed in the film and surrounded by lands in the film, the plurality of discrete extended elements having open proximal ends, closed distal ends, and sidewalls disposed between the proximal and distal ends, and portions of the plurality of discrete extended elements having a thickness less than that of the lands, wherein at least one of the distal ends and sidewalls of the discrete extended elements are thinned by at least about 25% relative to the lands, wherein at least some of the fibers of the nonwoven that are extending through the open proximal ends are compressed beyond their yield point such that the fibers are transformed from a non-flat configuration to a flattened configuration, wherein an area density of the plurality of discrete extended elements is from about 240 to about 10,000 per square centimeter,

wherein no adhesives are disposed between the film and the non-woven, and

wherein the embossed seal before being broken secures an absorbent article within the package.

9. A package comprising:

a film and a non-woven, the non-woven comprising fibers; and

a separable, non-melt fused embossed seal joining a portion of the film and the non-woven, the embossed seal comprising a plurality of discrete extended elements formed in the film and surrounded by lands in the film, the plurality of discrete extended elements having open proximal ends, closed distal ends, and sidewalls disposed between the proximal and distal ends, and portions of the plurality of discrete extended elements having a thickness less than that of the lands, wherein at least one of the distal ends and sidewalls of the discrete extended elements are thinned by at least about 25% relative to the lands, wherein the fibers of the non-woven are embedded in the sidewalls of the plurality of discrete extended elements through the open proximal ends, wherein some of the fibers of the non-woven are embedded in at least one of the lands and the sidewalls of the plurality of discrete extended elements through the open proximal ends and others of the fibers of the nonwoven are bundled together between adjacent discrete extended elements,

wherein an area density of the plurality of discrete extended elements is from about 240 to about 10,000 per square centimeter,

wherein no adhesives are disposed between the film and the non-woven, and

wherein the embossed seal before being broken secures an absorbent article within the package.
