Abstract

A debris trap for a drain includes an annular rim, defining a center, with a plurality of radial prongs, extending from the rim toward the center, and oriented to catch debris in the drainage pathway. The debris trap is removably disposable within a drainage pathway of a drain body, below a removable drain grate thereof.

Claims (15)

1. A floor drain system, comprising:

a floor drain body, having a circular lower portion defining an outlet and an upper portion defining an inlet, the inlet configured to removably receive a horizontal drain grate, the drain body including a circular recess below the inlet and above the outlet and concentric with the outlet, the circular recess having a diameter larger than an inner diameter of the outlet; and

a hair trap, configured to be horizontally removably disposed in the circular recess below the drain grate, having a planar circular rim of a diameter larger than the inner diameter of the outlet, the planar circular rim having a generally flat top surface, the hair trap having a perimeter and defining a center, and a plurality of radial prongs extending from the rim toward the center in a single array, each prong having a proximal portion that is coplanar with the circular rim and includes a generally flat top surface that is generally coplanar with the top surface of the circular rim, and a free distal end that is only upwardly curved from the plane of the circular rim and the top surface, the prongs defining an unobstructed central drainage pathway within the drain body, and the upwardly curved distal end being oriented to catch hair that is washed into the inlet.

2. A drain system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the radial prongs comprise more than 20 prongs, angularly uniformly spaced around the annular rim, a distal end of the prongs defining a free central opening of more than about 0.5 inches.

3. A drain system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein each prong has a cross-sectional shape having a flat top surface and a rounded bottom surface.

4. A drain system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the annular rim further comprises an upwardly oriented, cylindrical flange at its outer perimeter, configured to press-fit into the circular recess within the drain body.

5. A drain system in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising an upwardly raised protuberance, disposed along an exterior edge of the annular rim.

6. A method for removing hair from a floor drain, comprising:

removing a horizontal drain grate from a drain body of the floor drain;

removing a hair trap from a resting position within a vertical drama e pathway of the drain body and below a level of the drain grate, the hair trap having an annular rim having a perimeter, a top surface and defining a center and a plurality of integral, radial prongs extending upwardly and inwardly from the annular rim in an array to a free distal end located a first distance above the top surface of the annular rim and a second distance from the center, each prong having a proximal portion extending from the annular rim, each distal end being only upwardly curved from the proximal portion, and

removing hair from the prongs of the hair trap.

7. A method in accordance with claim 6 , wherein the step of removing the debris trap from the resting position within the drainage pathway comprises removing the debris trap from a circular recess into which the debris trap rests with a press fit.

8. A method in accordance with claim 6 , wherein the step of removing debris from the prongs of the debris trap comprises sliding debris toward the free distal ends of the prongs.

9. A method in accordance with claim 8 , wherein sliding debris toward the free distal ends of the prongs comprises sliding debris toward the upwardly curved distal ends of the prongs.

10. A method in accordance with claim 8 , further comprising the step of replacing the debris trap into the resting position within drain body and replacing the grate.
