Abstract

A surgical stapling apparatus includes a staple cartridge and an anvil member. The staple cartridge includes a plurality of surgical fasteners disposed in rows of retention slots. The staple cartridge may have an annular or linear configuration of retention slots. The tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge may be tapered or stepped. The anvil member has a tissue contacting surface that includes a number of pockets arranged for substantially aligning with the retention slots. In addition, the tissue contacting surface of the anvil member may complement the tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge.

wherein the generally funnel shape of the clinched tissue is adapted to receive the anvil member therethrough.

2. A surgical stapler according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a middle surface lying in a middle plane that is disposed parallel to the inner and outer planes and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis defined though the cartridge assembly, the middle surface defined in the distal face of the cartridge assembly and having an annular array of middle slots defined therethrough and configured to house a middle annular array of staples; and

wherein the anvil member further includes a middle surface disposed between the outer and inner surfaces and is adapted to clinch the corresponding staples disposed in the middle surface of the cartridge assembly in tissue upon expulsion of the staples from the cartridge assembly such that clinched tissue forms a generally funnel shape.

3. A surgical stapler according to claim 2 , wherein the inner and outer slots are radially aligned with each other and the middle slots are radially disposed therebetween.

4. A surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein a staple pusher member is in operative communication with the cartridge assembly for expelling the staples, the staple pusher member including a configuration that varies in height defined by outer and inner annular arrays of pushers corresponding to the outer and inner annular arrays of slots and staples.

5. A surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein a knife is operably disposed within the cartridge assembly and operable to sever tissue subsequent to tissue being clinched.

6. A surgical stapler according to claim 5 , wherein the surgical stapler further includes an actuation member configured to move the knife towards the anvil member.

7. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a tubular body portion;

a cartridge assembly disposed at a distal end of the tubular body portion and defining a longitudinal axis therethrough, the cartridge assembly including a distal face having a configuration that varies in height defined by a plurality of surfaces including a first surface lying in a first plane and a second surface lying in a second plane, the plurality of surfaces being arranged in descending order from the first surface to the second surface, the first and second planes of the first and second surfaces of the distal face being perpendicular to the longitudinal axis defined through the cartridge assembly and parallel to one another, the first surface having a first annular array of slots defined therethrough and the second surface having a second annular array of slots defined therethrough, the first and second annular arrays of slots configured to house corresponding first and second annular arrays of staples; and

an anvil member disposed at the distal end of the tubular body portion and positioned opposite the cartridge assembly, the anvil member including a proximal face having a configuration that varies in height defined by a plurality of surfaces including a first surface lying in a first plane and a second surface lying in a second plane, the plurality of surfaces being arranged in descending order from the first surface to the second surface, the anvil member adapted to clinch the staples in tissue upon expulsion of the staples from the cartridge assembly such that clinched tissue forms a generally funnel shape, wherein the generally funnel shape of the clinched tissue is adapted to receive the anvil member therethrough.

8. A surgical stapler according to claim 7 , wherein the distal face further includes a third surface lying in a third plane disposed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis defined through the cartridge assembly and parallel to the first and second planes of the first and second surfaces of the distal face of the cartridge assembly, the third surface having an annular array of third slots defined therethrough and configured to house a corresponding third annular array of staples.

9. A surgical stapler according to claim 8 , wherein the first and third slots are radially aligned with each other and the second slots are radially disposed therebetween.

10. A surgical stapler according to claim 8 , wherein a staple pusher member is in operative communication with the cartridge assembly for expelling the staples, the staple pusher member including a configuration that varies in height defined by first, second and third annular arrays of pushers corresponding to the first, second and third annular arrays of slots and staples.

11. A surgical stapler according to claim 7 , wherein the proximal face of the anvil member includes a corresponding first surface lying in a first plane and a corresponding second surface lying in a second plane, the first and second planes of the first and second surfaces of the proximal face disposed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cartridge assembly and parallel to one another.

12. A surgical stapler according to claim 11 , wherein the anvil member further includes a third surface lying in a third plane of the proximal face, the third plane of third surface being perpendicular to the longitudinal axis defined through the cartridge assembly and parallel to the first and second planes of the first and second surfaces of the proximal face of the anvil member.
