Anticancer agents of the anthracyclin family
Anthracyclin compounds of the general structure: are disclosed. In these compounds R 1 is methyl, acetyl or hydroxyacetyl; R 2 -R 5 and R 10 -R 13 are independently H or methyl; R 6 R 7 and R 8 are independently H, OH or OCH 3 ; and n is zero or one. The compounds are useful for treating cancer.
1. A compound of formula:

R 1 is chosen from methyl, acetyl and hydroxyacetyl;
R 2 -R 5 and R 10 -R 13 are independently chosen from H and methyl;
R 6 is chosen from OH and OCH 3 ;
R 7 and R 8 are independently chosen from H, OH and OCH 3 ; and
n is zero or one.
2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R 7 is OH.
3. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R 7 is OCH 3 .
4. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R 6 is OCH 3 .
5. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R 8 is H.
6. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R 8 is OH.
7. A compound according to claim 6 wherein R 6 is OCH 3 .
8. A compound according to claim 7 wherein R 7 is OCH 3 .
9. A compound according to claim 1 wherein n is one and all of R 2 -R 5 and R 10 -R 13 are methyl.
10. A compound according to claim 9 wherein n is one and all of R 2 -R 5 and R 10 -R 13 are methyl.
11. A compound according to claim 9 wherein R 1 is methyl.
12. A compound according to claim 10 wherein R 1 is methyl.
13. A compound according to claim 9 wherein R 1 is acetyl.
14. A compound according to claim 10 wherein R 1 is acetyl.
15. A compound according to claim 9 wherein R 1 is hydroxyacetyl.
16. A compound according to claim 10 wherein R 1 is hydroxyacetyl.
17. A method for treating cancer comprising administering to a patient diagnosed with cancer, a therapeutically effective amount of a compound according to claim 1 .
18. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound according to claim 1 .
