Abstract

This invention relates to a method for the preparation of lithium carbonate from lithium chloride containing brines. The method can include a silica removal step, capturing lithium chloride, recovering lithium chloride, supplying lithium chloride to an electrochemical cell and producing lithium hydroxide, contacting the lithium hydroxide with carbon dioxide to produce lithium carbonate.

Claims (24)

1. A method for the preparation of lithium hydroxide from a brine solution containing lithium and silica, the method comprising the steps of:

supplying a brine solution containing lithium and silica to a silica management step to remove silica from the brine solution containing lithium and silica and to produce a silica-lean lithium containing solution;

supplying the silica-lean lithium containing solution to a lithium capture step, said lithium capture step being operable to capture said lithium from the silica-lean lithium containing solution and wherein the lithium capture step selectively isolates lithium from the silica-lean lithium containing solution;

wherein the lithium capture step includes the step of contacting the silica-lean lithium containing solution with a lithium absorbent material operable to capture the lithium from the silica-lean lithium containing solution;

recovering lithium from the lithium capture step to produce a lithium-rich stream; and

supplying the lithium-rich stream to an electrochemical cell, wherein the electrochemical cell is maintained at conditions sufficient to produce a lithium hydroxide-rich solution.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the brine solution containing lithium and silica is a geothermal brine.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the brine solution containing lithium and silica is a Salton Sea geothermal brine.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the silica-lean lithium containing solution is substantially silica free.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the silica-lean lithium containing solution comprises a lithium chloride containing solution.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

increasing the concentration of lithium in the lithium-rich stream by removing at least a portion of the water in the lithium-rich stream prior to supplying the lithium-rich stream to the electrochemical cell.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lithium absorbent material is an intercalated lithium absorbent.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lithium absorbent material is a lithium aluminate intercalate.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

contacting the lithium-rich stream that contains at least one of calcium, magnesium, manganese or zinc with a base and a carbonate such that a portion of at least one of calcium, magnesium, manganese or zinc present in the lithium-rich stream is removed as a solid precipitate;

separating the solid precipitate from the lithium-rich stream to produce a solid waste precipitate and a purified lithium-rich stream, said purified lithium-rich stream having a lower concentration of at least one of calcium, magnesium, manganese or zinc; and

contacting the purified lithium-rich stream with an ion selective media to reduce the concentration of at least one of the ions selected from the group consisting of borate, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc, prior to supplying the purified lithium-rich stream to the electrochemical cell.

10. A method for the preparation of lithium hydroxide from a lithium chloride containing solution, the method comprising the steps of:

supplying the a lithium chloride containing solution to one or more lithium absorbents

operable to capture the lithium chloride from the lithium chloride containing solution and produce a lithium chloride-rich stream, wherein the one or more lithium absorbents is a lithium aluminate intercalate; and

supplying the lithium chloride-rich stream to an electrochemical cell, wherein the electrochemical cell is maintained at conditions sufficient to produce a lithium hydroxide-rich solution.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more lithium absorbents is a mixed metal oxide comprising lithium and manganese.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising the step of increasing the concentration of lithium chloride by removing at least a portion of the water in said lithium chloride-rich stream prior to supplying the lithium chloride-rich stream to the electrochemical cell.
