Abstract

Perforating assemblies and perforating safety systems capable of being disposed in a wellbore for hydrocarbon fluid production are described. The perforating assemblies can include an isolation device that is capable of preventing a detonation train when the assemblies are in a first orientation and allowing a detonation train when the perforating assemblies are in a second orientation. The isolation device can be automatically reoriented or reconfigured upon a change in the orientation of the perforating assembly.

Claims (18)

1. A perforating assembly capable of being disposed in a bore of a subterranean formation, the perforating assembly comprising:

an isolation device that is configured to prevent a detonation train when the perforating assembly is in a first inclination relative to a ground surface angle, and that is configured to allow the detonation train when the perforating assembly is in a second inclination relative to the ground surface angle,

wherein the isolation device comprises a weighted swivel structure movable depending on a movement of the perforating assembly between the first inclination and the second inclination thereby allowing or preventing the detonation train.

2. The perforating assembly of claim 1 , wherein the isolation device is configured to provide an obstruction to interrupt the detonation train when the perforating assembly is in the first inclination.

3. The perforating assembly of claim 1 , wherein the weighted swivel structure is configured to automatically rotate upon the perforating assembly being changed from the first inclination to the second inclination.

4. The perforating assembly of claim 1 , wherein the weighted swivel structure comprises a block that is configured to provide an obstruction to interrupt the detonation train when the perforating assembly is in the first inclination.

5. The perforating assembly of claim 1 , wherein the weighted swivel structure comprises a ballistic train.

6. The perforating assembly of claim 5 , wherein the ballistic train is configured to aid detonation of the perforating assembly when oriented in the second inclination.

7. The perforating assembly of claim 1 , wherein the isolation device is configured to swivel between a first position corresponding to the first inclination and a second position corresponding to the second inclination depending on gravity.

8. A perforating safety system for use in a subterranean well, the perforating safety system comprising:

a perforating assembly including a perforating gun, a firing head, and an isolation device, wherein the isolation device is configured to (i) selectively prevent transfer of detonation from the firing head to the perforating gun and (ii) be positioned in a configuration to allow the transfer of the detonation,

wherein the isolation device comprises a weighted swivel structure that is swivelable depending on gravity thereby allowing or preventing the transfer of detonation.

9. The perforating safety system of claim 8 , wherein the isolation device is configured to allow the transfer of the detonation when the perforating assembly is oriented in a substantially horizontal orientation.

10. The perforating safety system of claim 8 , wherein the isolation device is configured to provide an obstruction to prevent the transfer of the detonation when the perforating safety system is positioned to prevent the transfer.

11. The perforating safety system of claim 8 , wherein the weighted swivel structure is configured to automatically rotate upon the perforating safety system being changed from a first orientation to a second orientation.

12. The perforating safety system of claim 8 , wherein the weighted swivel structure comprises a block that is configured to provide an obstruction to prevent the transfer of the detonation when the perforating safety system is positioned to prevent the transfer.

13. The perforating safety system of claim 8 , wherein the weighted swivel structure comprises a ballistic train.

14. The perforating safety system of claim 13 , wherein the ballistic train is in a position that is aligned between a first detonating cord and a second detonating cord.
