Abstract

An active implantable medical device (AIMD). The AIMD comprises a knitted electrode assembly comprising: at least one biocompatible, electrically non-conductive filament arranged in substantially parallel rows each stitched to an adjacent row, and at least one biocompatible, electrically conductive filament having a first end intertwined with a first row of the at least one non-conductive filament, and a second end intertwined with a second row of the at least one non-conductive filament, wherein the first and second rows are spaced from one another.

Claims (28)

1. A knitted implantable electrode assembly comprising:

at least one biocompatible implantable, electrically non-conductive filament arranged in an intermeshed looped structure having substantially adjacent parallel rows each row stitched to an adjacent row with one or more loops, and

at least one biocompatible implantable, electrically conductive filament having first and second ends wound around spaced sections of the at least one non-conductive filament, wherein the first end is intertwined with a first row of the at least one non-conductive filament to form a connector contact, and the second end is intertwined with a second row of the at least one non-conductive filament to form an electrode, and wherein the first and second rows are spaced from one another and the connector contact and electrode are spaced from one another by one or more third rows of the at least one non-conductive filament between the connector contact and the electrode.

2. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-conductive filament consists of a single non-conductive filament.

3. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second ends of the at least one conductive filament each follow the same course as sections of the at least one non-conductive filament, and wherein the first and second ends of the at least one conductive filament are positioned on the exterior surface of the electrode assembly.

4. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein a region of the electrode assembly comprises a substantially planar member having a plurality of spaced intertwined first ends of a plurality of conductive filaments therein.

5. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein the knitted electrode assembly is constructed and arranged as an elongate tube.

6. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein the electrode assembly has substantially planar dimensions.

7. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more non-conductive filaments comprises a thermo-softening plastic material, and wherein at least a region of the electrode assembly is configured to be molded into a desired shape.

8. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein the electrode assembly comprises:

a projection in a surface thereof, and wherein the first intertwined end of the at least one conductive filament is disposed on the projection.

9. The knitted electrode assembly of claim 1 , wherein the electrode assembly comprises:

a concave region in a surface thereof, and wherein the first intertwined end of the at least one conductive filament is disposed in the concave region.

10. The knitted implantable electrode assembly of claim 1 wherein a region of the electrode assembly comprises a coiled tubular member, and the electrode assembly further comprises an elongate support structure positioned in the tube, and wherein the electrode assembly is configured to take the shape of the surface of the elongate structure.

11. An active implantable medical device (AIMD) comprising:

a knitted electrode assembly according to claim 1 .

12. The AIMD of claim 11 , further comprising:

an electronics module including a connector assembly having a module contact, the connector assembly configured to be detachably coupled to the electrode assembly such that the module contact and the connector contact of the knitted electrode assembly are electrically connected.

13. The AIMD of claim 12 , wherein the connector assembly includes a plurality of module contacts, and wherein the at least one conductive filament comprises a plurality of conductive filaments each having first and second ends intertwined with different first and second spaced rows, respectively, of the at least one non-conductive filament to form respective connector contacts and electrodes, and wherein the connector assembly is configured to be detachably coupled to the electrode assembly such that the plurality of module contacts are each electrically connected to respective connector contacts.

14. The AIMD of claim 12 , wherein the electrode assembly has an elongate shape, and wherein the connector assembly comprises an elongate receptacle configured to receive a region of the elongate electrode assembly therein.

15. The AIMD of claim 14 , wherein the region of the electrode assembly insertable into the receptacle comprises:

a plurality of spaced intertwined first ends of a plurality of conductive filaments; and

one or more sealing elements positioned about the electrode assembly between adjacent intertwined first ends.

16. The AIMD of claim 12 , wherein a section of the electrode assembly comprises an elongate receptacle, and wherein the connector assembly comprises an elongate member configured to inserted into the receptacle section of electrode assembly.

17. The AIMD of claim 12 , wherein a region of the electrode assembly comprises a coiled tubular member, and wherein the connector assembly comprises:

a section of a surface of the electronics module configured to be positioned adjacent to the coiled member, and

a retention cap configured to fit about the coiled tubular member and to force the coiled member against the surface of the electronics module.

18. The AIMD of claim 12 , wherein the module contact comprises a conductive rod configured to be inserted through a stitch of the knitted electrode assembly.
