Abstract

Disclosed is system comprising: a server platform operative to communicate with a wireless communication network; and data storage coupled to the server platform to store a plurality of business rules, wherein the server platform is operative to: generate a first provision instruction to provision a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) with a first rule set associated with a first set of business rules for wireless usage incurred by a mobile terminal operating in the wireless communication network; generate a first billing instruction based on the first set of business rules and a first data type determined by a packet gateway that inspects packet data communicated to or from the mobile terminal.

Claims (31)

1. A system comprising:

a server platform operative to communicate with a wireless communication network; and

data storage coupled to the server platform to store a plurality of business rules, wherein the server platform is operative to:

generate a provision instruction to provision a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) with a rule set associated with a set of business rules for wireless usage incurred by a mobile terminal operating in the wireless communication network;

provide an authentication page to be displayed on a graphical user interface (GUI) of the mobile terminal to allow a user to enter an authentication code to enable the user to incur wireless data usage;

receive the authentication code;

determine a first data type and a second data type at a packet gateway that inspects packet data communicated to or from the mobile terminal;

generate a first billing instruction based on the first data type and the set of business rules wherein the first billing instruction indicates that the user is to be billed based on the authentication code and at a first billing rate for the wireless data usage of the mobile terminal; and

generate a second billing instruction based on the set of business rules and the second data type, wherein the second billing instruction indicates a second party to be billed and a second billing rate for the wireless usage of the mobile terminal.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first data type and the second data type are determined based on, at least in part, at least one Access Point Name (APN).

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first data type is determined based on, at least in part, a first Access Point Name (APN) and the second data type is determined based on, at least in part, a second Access Point Name (APN).

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the first APN and the second APN are determined from communications from a serving GPRS support node (SGSN) or serving gateway (SGW) to the packet gateway.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the packet gateway comprises a gateway GPRS support node (GGSN) or a LTE packet gateway.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the GGSN or LTE packet gateway inspects packet data communicated to or from the mobile terminal to determine the first data type or the second data type.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the GGSN or LTE packet gateway performs Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to determine the first data type or the second data type.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first data type of the wireless usage is billed at a retail billing rate and the second data type of the wireless usage is billed at a wholesale billing rate.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user is an end consumer and the second party is a vehicle telemetry service provider.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second data type includes at least one of infotainment data type, telemetry data type and firmware update data type.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first data type includes at least one of infotainment data type and Wi-Fi hotspot data type.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the server platform further generates a first instruction to provision an HLR to allow or disallow services comprising least one of roaming, SMS, Voice, or Data associated with a specific APN for the mobile terminal.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the server platform, in response to detection of a transition condition, further generates a second instruction to provision the HLR to allow or disallow services comprising least one of roaming, SMS, Voice, or Data associated with a specific APN for the mobile terminal.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile terminal is a vehicle.

15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a gateway GPRS support node (GGSN) or a LTE packet gateway.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising the Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF).

17. A method performed by a server platform operative to communicate with a wireless communication network for providing wireless service to a mobile terminal operating in the wireless communication network, comprising:

generating a provision instruction to provision a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) with a rule set associated with a set of business rules for wireless usage incurred by the mobile terminal operating in the wireless communication network;

providing an authentication page to be displayed on a graphical user interface (GUI) of the mobile terminal to allow a user to enter an authentication code to enable the user to incur wireless data usage;

receiving the authentication code;

determining a first data type and a second data type at a packet gateway that inspects packet data communicated to or from the mobile terminal;

generating a first billing instruction based on the first data type and the set of business rules wherein the first billing instruction indicates that the user is to be billed based on the authentication code and at a first billing rate for the wireless data usage of the mobile terminal; and

generating a second billing instruction based on the set of business rules and the second data type, wherein the second billing instruction indicates a second party to be billed and a second billing rate for the wireless usage of the mobile terminal.
