Abstract

Disclosed herein is an apparatus preferably coupled to a boom on a truck, the apparatus capable of a plurality of configurations for a variety of uses. In one configuration, the apparatus can perform rapid semi-precise cutting of vegetation. In another configuration, the apparatus can perform more precise trimming of one or more areas (e.g., limbs) and optionally use an aerial tank mounted at the far end of a boom assembly. Typically the aerial tank will be mounted just beneath the attachment of the cutter head assembly to the boom and above one or more insulation couplings. In some disclosed embodiments, the aerial tank that can be remotely controlled. The aerial tank can be used as a liquid chemical supply or cleaning liquid supply as needed for various tree trimming tasks.

Claims (35)

1. A method of cutting trees using an automated tree trimming apparatus, the method comprising:

identifying at least a portion of one or more trees to be cut;

configuring the automated tree trimming apparatus based on the identified at least a portion, wherein configuring includes attaching and/or detaching one or more accessories to a cutter head assembly to create a configured cutter head assembly;

positioning the automated tree trimming apparatus at a first tree, wherein the automated tree trimming apparatus comprises the configured cutter head assembly, an aerial boom, and a liquid chemical supply tank containing a liquid chemical and attached to the aerial boom;

extending the aerial boom to position the cutter head assembly for cutting;

cutting a portion of the first tree utilizing the cutter head assembly; and

spraying at least a portion of the cutter head assembly with the liquid chemical to clean the cutter head assembly.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the liquid chemical comprises a chemical for mitigating the spread of tree diseases.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the act of spraying at least a portion of the cutter head assembly is performed while the aerial boom remains at least partially extended.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising repeating the acts of positioning, extending, cutting, and spraying for a second tree.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the act of cutting is performed utilizing a saw bar arm and the act of spraying comprises spraying one or more blades attached to the saw bar arm.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the act of cutting is performed utilizing a limb shear and the act of spraying comprises spraying the limb shear blades.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the method is at least partially performed by wireless remote control.

8. A method of cutting a tree limb, the method comprising:

identifying at least a portion of the tree limb to be cut;

configuring a cutting head assembly based on the identified at least a portion, wherein configuring includes at least one of attaching or detaching one or more separately attachable accessories to the cutting head assembly to create a configured cutting head assembly, wherein the one or more separately attachable accessories comprise a limb clamp and a limb cutting mechanism;

extending an aerial boom from a vehicle, the aerial boom coupled to the configured cutting head assembly;

articulating the configured cutting head assembly connected at least in part by rotating the configured cutting head assembly relative to an axis of the aerial boom;

activating the limb clamp on the configured cutting head assembly to secure a tree limb;

activating the limb cutting mechanism to sever the tree limb secured by the limb clamp; and

moving the aerial boom while the severed tree limb is secured in the limb clamp.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method is performed by remote control.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the limb cutting mechanism comprises a limb shear.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the limb cutting mechanism comprises one or more circular saw blades.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the limb cutting mechanism comprises a chainsaw blade.

13. A method of cutting a tree trunk, the method comprising:

identifying at least a portion of one or more tree trunks to be cut;

configuring a cutting head assembly based on the identified at least a portion, wherein configuring includes at least one of attaching or detaching one or more separately attachable accessories to the cutting head assembly to create a configured cutting head assembly, wherein the one or more separately attachable accessories comprise a trunk clamp and a trunk cutting mechanism;

extending an aerial boom from a vehicle, the aerial boom coupled to the configured cutting head assembly;

articulating the configured cutting head assembly at least in part by rotating the configured cutting head assembly relative to an axis of the boom;

activating the trunk clamp on the configured cutting head assembly to secure a portion of the tree trunk;

activating the trunk cutting mechanism to sever an upper portion of the tree trunk; and

moving the aerial boom while the severed upper portion of the trunk is secured in the trunk clamp.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the trunk cutting mechanism comprises a chainsaw blade.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein activating the limb cutting mechanism to sever the tree limb causes the tree limb to be severed in conformance with an arbor cut.
