Abstract

A robotic carton unloader for automatic unloading of cartons from a carton pile. In various embodiments, a robotic carton unloader may comprise a mobile body, a movable robotic arm attached to the mobile body and comprising an end effector configured to unload a row of cartons in a side-by-side orientation from the carton pile, and a conveyor system mounted on the mobile body and configured to receive the row of cartons from the end effector in the side-by-side orientation. In various embodiments the conveyor system may comprise a front-end descrambler and a central descrambler coupled to the front-end descrambler. In various embodiments, the robotic arm may be configured to straddle at least a portion of the mobile body and at least a portion of the conveyor system such that the conveyor system conveys cartons from the carton pile through the robotic arm.

Claims (23)

1. A robotic carton unloader for unloading cartons in a carton pile, the robotic carton unloader movable across a floor, the robotic carton unloader comprising:

a mobile body;

a movable robotic arm attached to the mobile body and comprising an end effector at an end thereof, the end effector configured to unload a row of cartons in a side-by-side orientation from the carton pile;

a descrambling conveyor mounted on the mobile body configured to receive the row of cartons from the end effector in the side-by-side orientation, the descrambling conveyor further configured to simultaneously move the row of cartons towards a rear of the robotic carton unloader and to singulate the cartons while the cartons move.

2. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the descrambling conveyor comprises a plurality of rows of conveyors oriented side by side.

3. The robotic carton unloader of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the conveyors in the plurality of rows of conveyors is configured to move a carton carried thereon at a different speed than other conveyors in the plurality of rows of conveyors.

4. The robotic carton unloader of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the conveyors in the plurality of rows of conveyors is configured to move the carton traveling thereon rearwards and towards a center line of the descrambling conveyor.

5. The robotic carton unloader of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the conveyors in the plurality of rows of conveyors comprises skewed rollers.

6. The robotic carton unloader of claim 5 , wherein the skewed rollers of the at least one of the conveyors in the plurality of rows of conveyors are skewed in herringbone patterns.

7. The robotic carton unloader of claim 3 , wherein the conveyors in the plurality of rows of conveyors comprise belt conveyors.

8. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the descrambling conveyor comprises a front-end descrambler and a central descrambler, the front-end descrambler feeding the cartons to the central descrambler.

9. The robotic carton unloader of claim 8 , wherein the front-end descrambler is pivotally mounted to the mobile body at an intersection of the front-end descrambler with the central descrambler, the front-end descrambler having a front end pivotally movable towards and away from the floor.

10. The robotic carton unloader of claim 8 , wherein the central descrambler comprises a plurality of rows configured to move the cartons toward a rear of the robotic carton unloader, the plurality of rows are on both sides of a center line running a length of the central descrambler.

11. The robotic carton unloader of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of rows is comprised of a plurality of rollers angled toward the center line.

12. The robotic carton unloader of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of rows are associated with a plurality of zones, each zone being configured to move the cartons at a different speed.

The robotic carton unloader of claim 12 , wherein a first set of zones of the plurality of zones located on a first side of the center line of the central descrambler are configured to move the cartons at a faster speed than a second set of zones of the plurality of zones located on a second side of the center line of the central descrambler.

14. The robotic carton unloader of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of zones comprises three zones located on a first side of the center line of the central descrambler and three zones located on a second side of the center line of the central descrambler.

15. The robotic carton unloader of claim 8 , wherein the front-end descrambler comprises a plurality of parallel rows configured to move the cartons toward the central descrambler.

16. The robotic carton unloader of claim 15 , wherein each in the plurality of parallel rows is configured to move the cartons toward the central descrambler at a different speed.

The robotic carton unloader of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of parallel rows comprises inner rows and outer-most rows, and wherein the inner rows of the plurality of parallel rows are configured to move the cartons toward the central descrambler at faster speeds than the outer-most rows of the plurality of parallel rows.

18. The robotic carton unloader of claim 17 , wherein each of the outer-most rows of the plurality of parallel rows comprise a section of rollers configured to move the cartons diagonally inward toward the inner rows of the plurality of parallel rows.

The robotic carton unloader of claim 17 , wherein a center row of the inner rows of the plurality of parallel rows is configured to move the cartons toward the central descrambler at a fast speed, two middle rows of the inner rows of the plurality of parallel rows are configured to move the cartons toward the central descrambler at a medium speed, and two outer rows of the outer-most rows of the plurality of parallel rows are configured to move the cartons toward the central descrambler at a slow speed.

20. The robotic carton unloader of claim 8 , wherein the front-end descrambler is configured to move laterally relative to the central descrambler.
