Abstract

Disclosed are various exemplary embodiments of a retainer system for a ground engaging tool. In one exemplary embodiment, the retainer system may include a lock having a C-shaped portion defining a lock slot between two circumferential ends for receiving a portion of a support member to be locked with the ground engaging tool. The retainer system may also include a retainer bushing having an inner surface configured to receive the lock, where the lock may be rotatable relative to the retainer bushing and about a retainer axis between an unlocked position and a locked position. The retainer system may further include a cover piece configured to be attached to the retainer bushing for covering the lock slot of the lock when the lock is in the locked position.

Claims (19)

1. A retainer system for a ground engaging tool, comprising:

a lock including a C-shaped portion defining a lock slot between two circumferential ends for receiving a portion of a support member to be locked with the ground engaging tool;

a retainer bushing including an inner surface configured to receive the lock, wherein the lock is rotatable relative to the retainer bushing and about a retainer axis between an unlocked position and a locked position; and

a cover piece configured to be attached to the retainer bushing for covering the lock slot of the lock when the lock is in the locked position,

wherein the retainer bushing comprises an inner flange extending inward from the inner surface and defining a bottom surface of the retainer bushing, and the cover piece is configured to contact the inner flange.

2. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein the cover piece comprises an outer plate surface that is substantially flush with the bottom surface of the retainer bushing.

3. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein the cover piece comprises a generally C-shaped plate member extending about the retainer axis.

4. The retainer system of claim 3 , wherein the C-shaped plate member extends approximately the same angular degree around the retainer axis as the C-shaped portion.

5. The retainer system of claim 3 , wherein the cover piece comprises an outer plate surface extending in a plane substantially perpendicular to the retainer axis.

6. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the cover piece is integrally formed with the retainer bushing.

7. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein:

the cover piece comprises at least one projection extending from an inner plate surface of the cover piece, and

the retainer bushing comprises at least one opening configured to receive the at least one projection to attach the cover piece thereto.

8. The retainer system of claim 7 , wherein the retainer bushing comprises at least one detent formed on the inner surface, and the at least one opening is formed on an outer surface directly opposite the inner surface.

9. The retainer system of claim 7 , wherein the cover piece comprises a generally C-shaped plate member, and the at least one projection comprises a pair of projections each located adjacent a circumferential end of the C-shaped plate member.

10. The retainer system of claim 9 , wherein the cover piece comprises a pair of tabs each extending radially outwardly from the C-shaped plate member adjacent each of the circumferential ends of the C-shaped plate member, and each of the pair of projections extends from the corresponding one of the tabs.

11. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein:

the cover piece comprises a radial rib extending radially outwardly from an outer edge surface of the cover piece, and

the retainer bushing comprises a radial slit formed on an inner flange extending inward from the inner surface adjacent a bottom surface of the retainer bushing, the radial slit being configured to receive the radial rib.
