Medical balloon
A non-compliant medical balloon, where the non-compliant medical balloon may be changed from a deflated state to an inflated state by increasing pressure within the balloon, is made with a first fiber layer, a second fiber layer over said first fiber layer such that the fibers of the first fiber layer and the fibers of the second fiber layer form an angle and a binding layer coating the first fiber layer and said second fiber layer. The interior surface area of the non-compliant medical balloon remains unchanged when the balloon changes from a deflated state to an inflated state.
1. A method of manufacturing a medical balloon, comprising:
attaching a first elongate reinforcement member in a first direction on a polymer wall, said attaching step comprising aligning the first elongate member with a longitudinal axis of the medical balloon;
laying a second elongate reinforcement member in a second direction over a single side of the first elongate reinforcement member; and
bonding the second elongate reinforcement member to the first elongate reinforcement member.
2. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of providing a base balloon comprising the polymer wall.
3. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of applying a polymeric solution onto a mandrel to form the polymer wall.
4. The method of claim 3 , further including the step of removing the mandrel.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bonding step comprises coating the first and second elongate reinforcement members with a polymeric solution to form a fiber/polymeric matrix.
6. The method of claim 5 , further including the step of curing the fiber/polymeric matrix.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first elongate member is substantially equal in length to the length of the longitudinal axis of the balloon.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second direction is a radial direction around the circumference of the balloon.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the laying step comprises winding the second reinforcement member substantially over the entire length of the longitudinal axis of the balloon.
10. The method of claim 9 , further including the step of winding a third elongate reinforcement member around the circumference of the balloon in a direction opposite that of the second elongate reinforcement member.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first direction is substantially perpendicular to the second direction.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the attaching step comprises applying an adhesive to the polymer wall.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the attaching step comprises applying an adhesive to the first reinforcement member.
14. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of creating a fabric of a plurality of first elongate reinforcement members, and wherein the attaching step comprises attaching the plurality of first elongate reinforcement members in the first direction on the polymer wall.
15. The method of claim 14 , further including the step of cutting the fabric into a pattern and wherein the attaching step comprises wrapping said fabric around the polymer wall.
16. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second elongate reinforcement members comprises an inelastic fiber.
17. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second elongate reinforcement members is ribbon shaped.
