Abstract

A supplemental vehicle lighting system that is responsive to a trailer backup assist system is provided. The system includes a rear vehicle fixture defining a keylock hole customarily used in conjunction with a corresponding keylock cylinder. A light assembly is provided in the place of a keylock cylinder and operably coupled to the keylock hole. The light assembly includes a housing having a barrel that is concentrically aligned with the keylock hole and includes a distal end and a proximal end. A lighting device is disposed inside the housing and operable to emit light through the barrel beginning from the proximal end. A lens is coupled to the distal end of the barrel and is disposed to at least partially coincide with the keylock hole, wherein the lens is configured to disperse light emitted from the lighting device to illuminate a rear vehicle area.

Claims (31)

1. A supplemental vehicle lighting system comprising:

a rear vehicle fixture defining a keylock hole; and

a light assembly occupying a space formerly reserved for a keylock cylinder and operably coupled to the keylock hole, wherein the light assembly comprises:

a lens disposed to at least partially coincide with the keylock hole; and

a lighting device configured to emit light through the lens to illuminate a rear vehicle area.

2. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the rear vehicle fixture comprises one selected from a group comprising: a tailgate, a liftgate, a trunk lid, a swing door, and a sliding door.

3. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the lighting device comprises an L-shaped plug having at least one light emitting diode.

4. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the lens is unitary and comprises a first section, a second section, and an intermediate section therebetween.

5. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 4 , wherein the intermediate section of the lens abuts against the rear vehicle fixture such that the first section of the lens at least partially coincides with the keylock hole.

6. A light assembly mounted to a rear vehicle fixture and operably coupled to a keylock hole defined in the rear vehicle fixture, wherein the light assembly occupies a space formerly reserved for a keylock cylinder, the light assembly comprising:

a lens disposed proximate the keylock hole; and

a lighting device configured to emit light through the lens to illuminate a rear vehicle area.

7. The light assembly of claim 6 , wherein the rear vehicle fixture comprises one selected from a group comprising: a tailgate, a liftgate, a trunk lid, a swing door, and a sliding door.

8. The light assembly of claim 6 , wherein the light assembly comprises a housing having a barrel with a distal end and a proximal end.

9. The light assembly of claim 8 , wherein the lighting device is disposed inside the housing and is operable to emit light through the barrel beginning from the proximal end.

10. The light assembly of claim 9 , wherein the lighting device comprises an L-shaped plug having at least one light emitting diode provided on an end of the lighting device abutting against the proximal end of the barrel.

11. The light assembly of claim 10 , wherein the end of the lighting device supports a heat sink board on which the at least one light emitting diode is mounted.

12. The light assembly of claim 8 , wherein the lens is unitary and comprises an intermediate section that abuts against the distal end of the barrel and abuts against the rear vehicle fixture such that the barrel is concentrically aligned with the keylock hole.

13. The light assembly of claim 12 , wherein the intermediate section of the lens is between a first section and a second section, wherein the second section is inserted into the barrel and the first section is disposed to at least partially coincide with the keylock hole.

14. A supplemental vehicle lighting system comprising:

a rear vehicle fixture defining a keylock hole;

a light assembly occupying a space formerly reserved for a keylock cylinder and operably coupled to the keylock hole, wherein the light assembly comprises:

a lens disposed proximate the keylock hole; and

a lighting device configured to emit light through the lens to illuminate a rear vehicle area;

wherein the light assembly is operable based on input from a trailer backup assist system.

15. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 14 , wherein the rear vehicle fixture comprises one selected from a group comprising: a tailgate, a liftgate, a trunk lid, a swing door, and a sliding door.

16. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 14 , wherein the light assembly comprises a housing having a barrel with a distal end and a proximal end.

17. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 16 , wherein the lighting device is provided inside the housing and comprises an L-shaped plug having at least one light emitting diode provided on an end of the lighting device abutting the proximal end of the barrel.

18. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 17 , wherein the lighting device supports a heat management member for dissipating heat generated by the lighting device.

19. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 16 , wherein the lens is unitary and comprises an intermediate section that abuts against the distal end of the barrel and abuts against the rear vehicle fixture such that the barrel is concentrically aligned with the keylock hole.

20. The supplemental vehicle lighting system of claim 19 , wherein the intermediate section of the lens is between a first section and a second section, wherein the second section is configured to be inserted into the barrel and the first section is disposed to at least partially coincide with the keylock hole.
