Abstract

The disclosure provides materials and methods for conferring improved plant traits or benefits on plants. The materials can include a formulation comprising an exogenous endophytic bacterial population, which can be disposed on an exterior surface of a seed or seedling, typically in an amount effective to colonize the plant. The formulations can include at least one member selected from the group consisting of an agriculturally compatible carrier, a tackifier, a microbial stabilizer, a fungicide, an antibacterial agent, an herbicide, a nematicide, an insecticide, a plant growth regulator, a rodenticide, and a nutrient.

Claims (26)

1. A method for preparing a corn seed comprising an endophytic bacterial population, said method comprising applying to an exterior surface of the corn seed a formulation comprising an endophytic bacterial population consisting essentially of an endophytic bacterium comprising a 16S rRNA nucleic acid sequence comprising a nucleic acid sequence consisting of SEQ ID NO:9.

2. The method of claim 1 , the formulation comprising 10 8 -10 9 colony-forming units (CFU) mL −1 of the endophytic bacterial population.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to be colonize shoot tissue of a plant grown from the seed when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase photosynthetic rates of a plant grown from the seed by at least 17% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase the rate of seed germination of a plant grown from the seed by at least 20% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase the rate of seed germination of Helmi, Morignon, Pelicon, Peso and Cesor maize cultivars grown from the seed by at least 20% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase the rate of seed germination of Palazzo and die Samba maize cultivars grown from the seed by at least 32% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase root biomass of a plant grown from the seed under gnotobiotic conditions when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase total biomass of a plant grown from the seed under gnotobiotic conditions when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to colonize shoot tissue of Kolea, Mazurka and DaSilvie cultivars of maize grown from the seed when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase stomatal conductance of a plant grown from the seed by 43% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase photosynthesis rates by 17% in DaSilvie, Mazurka, and Kolea cultivars grown from the seed when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase photochemical efficiency of a plant grown from the seed by 7% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase leaf area of a plant grown from the seed by 18% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase chlorophyll content of a plant grown from the seed by 10% when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the formulation comprises 10 8 -10 9 colony-forming units (CFU) mL −1 of the endophytic bacterial population; and

the endophytic bacterial population is applied in an amount effective to increase the rate of seed germination of a plant grown from the seed when compared with a reference agricultural plant grown under the same conditions; and
