Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for treatment of respiratory disorders such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic sinusitis, including cystic fibrosis, interstitial fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and neoplasia. The method involves administration, preferably oral, nasal or pulmonary administration, of anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative drugs (rapamycin or paclitaxel and their analogs) and an additive.

Claims (9)

1. A balloon catheter comprising a balloon and a coating layer overlying an exterior surface of the balloon, the coating layer comprising a water insoluble drug for the treatment of a respiratory system and an additive that enhances absorption of the water insoluble drug into tissue of the respiratory system, wherein:

the balloon catheter is sized and configured for insertion into a passage of the respiratory system;

the water insoluble drug is selected from the group consisting of paclitaxel and rapamycin;

the additive is a combination of lactobionic acid and diethanolamine.

2. A method for treating a respiratory system, the method comprising:

inserting a balloon catheter according to claim 1 into a passage of the respiratory system;

inflating the balloon and releasing the water insoluble drug to a wall of the passage;

deflating the balloon; and

withdrawing the balloon catheter from the passage.
