Abstract

Various articles may include a knitted component formed of multiple knitted component portions. The knitted component is formed of unitary knit construction and includes multiple tubular rib structures and multiple webbed areas. An article of footwear may include an upper incorporating a knitted component. The upper may be assembled through a wrapping process. The upper may comprise areas with tubular rib structures arranged in different orientations over the forefoot region, the midfoot region, the vamp region, and the heel region of the article of footwear. Some regions of the upper may have a greater number of tubular rib structures than other regions, and some tubular rib structures can include tensile elements.

Claims (13)

1. A method of manufacturing a knitted component, the method comprising:

knitting a first plurality of courses to define a first webbed area of the knitted component, the first webbed area having a front surface, wherein the knitted component is associated with a longitudinal direction and a lateral direction, the first webbed area configured to move between a neutral position and an extended position, wherein in the neutral position, a first area of the front surface is hidden from visual observation from a first viewing perspective, wherein in the extended position, the first area of the front surface is revealed for visual observation from the first viewing perspective, the first webbed area being biased toward the neutral position, the first webbed area configured to stretch in the lateral direction toward the extended position of the first webbed area in response to a force applied to the first webbed area, wherein knitting the first plurality of courses includes extending the first plurality of courses along the longitudinal direction of the knitted component; and

knitting a second plurality of courses to define a first tubular rib structure of the knitted component, wherein at least one of the first plurality of courses is joined with at least one of the second plurality of courses, wherein knitting the second plurality of courses includes extending the second plurality of courses along the longitudinal direction of the knitted component.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of knitting the second plurality of courses to define the first tubular rib structure further comprises:

knitting two co-extensive and overlapping knit layers; and

providing a central area of the first tubular rib structure that is generally unsecured to form a hollow between the two knit layers.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of inlaying a tensile element within the hollow of the central area of the first tubular rib structure.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein knitting the first webbed area includes knitting the first webbed area with a first yarn; and

wherein knitting the first tubular rib structure includes knitting the first tubular structure with a second yarn, the second yarn being different than the first yarn.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising knitting a second webbed area, wherein the second webbed area is substantially similar to the first webbed area; and

knitting a second tubular rib structure, wherein the second tubular rib structure is substantially similar to the first tubular rib structure;

wherein the first tubular rib structure is disposed adjacent to the first webbed area in the lateral direction, the first webbed area is disposed between the first tubular rib structure and the second tubular rib structure in the lateral direction, and the second tubular rib structure is disposed adjacent to the second webbed area in the lateral direction; and

wherein the first webbed area, the first tubular rib structure, the second webbed area, and the second tubular rib structure, are formed of unitary knit construction.
