Abstract

A point of sale system capable of operating in an indicia-reading mode or a verification mode is disclosed. In the indicia-reading mode, the point of sale system configures its illumination, imaging, and processing to read indicia as part of a normal checkout process. If triggered by a user or by an event, the point of sale system may operate in a verification mode. In the verification mode, the point of sale system enables the necessary illumination, imaging, and processing to verify an item. This verification includes illuminating the item in a way that causes a noticeable response from a security mark (or marks) on the item. An image of the response may be captured and processed to authenticate/verify the item. The point of sale system may then respond to the verification and/or may store the image/results as a record of the verification.

Claims (47)

1. A point of sale system for facilitating a checkout process comprising tallying items for payment, the point of sale system comprising:

an illumination subsystem configured to illuminate items with radiation from at least one light source;

an imaging subsystem configured to acquire images of the items illuminated by the illumination subsystem;

an indicia-reading subsystem, wherein the point of sale system is configured to operate in an indicia-reading mode and in a verification mode, and wherein the indicia-reading subsystem is configured to decode indicia information from images acquired by the imaging subsystem when the point of sale system is in the indicia-reading mode, so that the decoded indicia information is configured for use in the tallying of the items; and

a verification subsystem configured to:

verify items from images acquired by the imaging subsystem when the point of sale system is in the verification mode, and

produce an output corresponding to the verification, so that the output is configured to restrict the checkout process when the output is indicative of a failed verification.

2. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the imaging subsystem comprises a sensor for detecting visible light.

3. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the imaging subsystem comprises a sensor for detecting ultraviolet (UV) light.

4. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the imaging subsystem comprises a sensor for detecting infrared (IR) light.

5. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the imaging subsystem comprises a sensor configured to detect infrared (IR), visible (VIS), and ultraviolet (UV) light.

6. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the verification subsystem verifies the item by (i) sensing a response to the radiation or (ii) sensing no response to the radiation.

7. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the output of the verification subsystem is an image.

8. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the output is an alert to the user.

9. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the illumination subsystem, the imaging subsystem, the indicia-reading subsystem, and the verification subsystem are embodied in a hand-held scanner.

10. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the illumination subsystem is configured to adjust the illumination of the items depending on the operating mode.

11. The point of sale system according to claim 10 , wherein the radiation from the illumination subsystem comprises visible light while the point of sale system is in indicia reading mode.

12. The point of sale system according to claim 10 , wherein the radiation from the illumination subsystem comprises ultraviolet light while the point of sale system is in verification mode.

13. The point of sale system according to claim 10 , wherein the radiation from the illumination subsystem comprises infrared (IR) light while the point of sale system is in verification mode.

14. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the point of sale system is configured to automatically change from the indicia-reading mode to the verification mode in response to indicia information decoded by the indicia-reading subsystem.

15. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the output of the verification subsystem comprises a pass signal or a fail signal, and the point of sale system is configured to automatically change from the verification mode to the indicia-reading mode in response to the output from the verification subsystem being the pass signal.

16. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the point of sale system comprises a cash register configured to facilitate the checkout process.

17. The point of sale system according to claim 1 , wherein the verification mode is activated when a verification requirement is triggered in the checkout process.

18. The point of sale system according to claim 17 , wherein the verification requirement comprises a transaction requiring a proof of age.

19. The point of sale system according to claim 17 , wherein the verification requirement comprises a transaction using a currency above a certain denomination.

20. The point of sale system according to claim 17 , wherein the verification requirement comprises a transaction using a credit card or debit card.

21. The point of sale system according to claim 17 , wherein the verification requirement comprises a transaction using near field communication or a smartphone payment service.

22. A point of sale system for facilitating a checkout process comprising tallying items for payment, the point of sale system being capable of operating in either (i) an indicia-reading mode or (ii) a verification mode, and the point of sale system comprising:

an illumination subsystem configured to illuminate items with radiation from at least one light source;

an imaging subsystem configured to acquire images of the items illuminated by the illumination subsystem;

an indicia-reading subsystem configured to decode indicia information from images acquired by the imaging subsystem when the point of sale system is in the indicia-reading mode, so that the decoded indicia information is configured for use in the tallying of the items; and

a verification subsystem configured to:

verify items from images acquired by the imaging subsystem when the point of sale system is in the verification mode, and

produce an output corresponding to the verification, so that the output is configured to restrict the checkout process when the output is indicative of a failed verification,

wherein the point of sale system is configured to automatically change from the verification mode to the indicia-reading mode in response to the output from the verification subsystem being indicative of a passed verification.

23. The point of sale system according to claim 22 , wherein the verification mode is activated by a user.

24. The point of sale system according to claim 22 , wherein the verification mode is activated when a particular indicium is decoded by the indicia-reading subsystem.

25. A point of sale system for facilitating a checkout process comprising tallying items for payment, the point of sale system being capable of operating in either (i) an indicia-reading mode activated by default or (ii) a verification mode, and the point of sale system comprising:

an illumination subsystem configured to illuminate items with radiation from at least one light source;

an imaging subsystem configured to acquire images of the items illuminated by the illumination subsystem;
