Abstract

A system may measure the virality of content items on a network. The virality may be measured for Internet content using indices. Indices may be generated that represent the share or news worthiness of content. An indexer may monitor the content items and generate a score which may be used to identify which content items are most likely to receive a user access request or referral from the remote server. A logic generator may display visual elements as graphical representations of the index score.

Claims (37)

1. A system for measuring virality of content items on a network, the system comprising:

a publisher server for providing a page comprising a content item, the page provided in response to a referral from a referral server, the referral for providing user remote access to the content item;

an indexer for measuring performance of the content item, the indexer further comprising a processor configured to:

determine an origin referral server of the referral for the content item;

determine an origin attribute of the origin referral server, the origin attribute including an indication that the origin referral server is at least one of a search engine server or a social network server;

determine a number of accesses of the content item from origin referral servers having the origin attribute;

determine at least one of a total number of accesses of the content item or a number of accesses of the content item from other origin referral servers other than a search engine server or a social network server;

generate an index score for the content item, the index score comprising a proportion of the number of accesses of the content item from the origin referral servers having the origin attribute compared to at least one of the total number of accesses of the number of accesses of the content from the other origin referral servers; and

a logic generator for displaying a visual element on a display device, wherein the visual element is a graphical representation of the index score over time.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor of the indexer is further configured to determine an attribute property associated with the content item.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the attribute property comprises one or more of sports, news, business, social websites, entertainment, travel, automobile, video, lifestyle, tabloid, knowledge market, or geographic features.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the visual representation is a line graph, bar graph, or sortable list.

5. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a programmed processor for measuring the virality of web content, the storage medium comprising instructions operative for:

monitoring a web content item;

identifying when the web content item has received an access request by a remote network resource;

determining an origin server for the access request for the web content item;

determining an origin property associated with the origin server, the origin property comprising an indication that the origin server is at least one of a search engine server or a social network server;

determining a number of access requests for the web content item from origin servers having the origin property;

determining at least one of a total number of access requests for the web content item or a number of access requests for the web content item from other origin servers that do not have the origin property;

determining a performance measurement of the web content item, the performance measurement comprising a proportion of the number of access requests for the web content item from origin servers having the origin property compared to at least one of the total number of access requests for the web content item or the number of access requests for the web content item from the other origin servers that do not have the origin property; and

displaying a graphical representation of the performance measurement of the web content over time on a display device.

6. The storage medium of claim 5 , further comprising instructions operative for determining an attribute property associated with the web content item.

7. The storage medium of claim 6 , wherein the attribute property comprises one or more of sports, news, business, social websites, entertainment, travel, automobile, video, lifestyle, tabloid, knowledge market, or geographic features.

8. The storage medium of claim 5 , wherein the graphical representation comprises a line graph, bar graph, or sortable list that displays the performance measurement.

9. A computer-implemented method of measuring virality of web-content, comprising:

monitoring a content item;

identifying when the content item has received an access request by a remote network resource;

determining an origin server for the access request for the content item;

determining an origin property associated with the origin server, the origin property comprising an indication that the origin server is at least one of a search engine server or a social network server;

determining a number of access requests for the content item from origin servers having the origin property;

determining at least one of a total number of access requests for the content item or a number of access requests for the content item from other origin servers that do not have the origin property;

receiving a request to generate an index representing the virality of the content item for a selected time period;

determining a virality measurement of the content item, the virality measurement comprising a proportion of the number of access requests for the content item from origin servers having the origin property for the selected time period compared to at least one of the total number of access requests for the content item or the number of access requests for the content item from the other origin servers that do not have the origin property for the selected time period; and

displaying a graphical representation of the virality measurement of the content for the selected time period on a display device.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , further comprising determining an attribute property associated with the content item.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , wherein the attribute property is one or more of sports, news, business, social websites, entertainment, travel, automobile, video, lifestyle, tabloid, knowledge market, or geographic features.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein the graphical representation comprises a line graph, bar graph, or sortable list.
