Abstract

Software revalidation. In one example embodiment, a method for software revalidation may include various steps. For example, the method may include receiving, at a machine on which a software application has been installed and activated, activation rules, from an activation server, that have been updated since the release of the software application to account for new or updated software or hardware with which the software application is configured to be employed. The method may also include periodically applying, at the machine, the updated activation rules to newly-collected machine configuration information from the machine to determine whether a product key remains valid for the newly-collected machine configuration information and, if the product key remains valid for the newly-collected machine configuration information, revalidating, at the machine, the software application to authorize continued access to the software application.

Claims (28)

1. A method for software revalidation, the method comprising:

receiving, at a machine on which a software application has been installed and activated, activation rules, from an activation server, that have been updated since the release of the software application to account for new or updated software or hardware with which the software application is configured to be employed; and

periodically applying, at the machine, the updated activation rules to newly-collected machine configuration information from the machine to determine whether a product key remains valid for the newly-collected machine configuration information and, if the product key remains valid for the newly-collected machine configuration information, revalidating, at the machine, the software application to authorize continued access to the software application.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the machine is a physical computer.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the machine is a virtual machine.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the newly-collected machine configuration information includes information regarding an operating system installed on the machine.

5. The method as recited in claim 4 , wherein the applying, at the machine, of the updated activation rules includes applying, at the machine, the updated activation rules to determine whether the product key is valid for the operating system installed on the machine.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the operating system installed on the machine is a different operating system than was installed on the machine when the software application was installed and activated on the machine.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the operating system installed on the machine is a more expensive operating system than was installed on the machine when the software application was installed and activated on the machine.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

periodically reupdating the activation rules at the activation server; and

receiving, at the machine, the reupdated activation rules, from the activation server, after each periodic reupdate.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein if the product key is invalid for the newly-collected machine configuration information, invalidating the software application to prevent continued access to the software application.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the updated activation rules are received in a signed license file that is configured to prevent a user of the machine from undetectably altering the updated activation rules in the signed license file.

11. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing one or more programs that causes one or more processors to execute a method for software revalidation, the method comprising:

receiving, at a machine on which a software application has been installed and activated, activation rules, from an activation server, that have been updated since the release of the software application to account for new or updated software or hardware with which the software application is configured to be employed; and

periodically applying, at the machine, the updated activation rules to newly-collected machine configuration information from the machine to determine whether a product key remains valid for the newly-collected machine configuration information and, if the product key remains valid for the newly-collected machine configuration information, revalidating, at the machine, the software application to authorize continued access to the software application.

12. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 11 , wherein the machine is a physical computer.

13. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 11 , wherein the machine is a virtual machine.

14. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 11 , wherein the newly-collected machine configuration information includes information regarding an operating system installed on the machine.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 14 , wherein the applying, at the machine, of the updated activation rules includes applying, at the machine, the updated activation rules to determine whether the product key is valid for the operating system installed on the machine.

16. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 15 , wherein the operating system installed on the machine is a different operating system than was installed on the machine when the software application was installed and activated on the machine.

17. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 16 , wherein the operating system installed on the machine is a more expensive operating system than was installed on the machine when the software application was installed and activated on the machine.

18. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises:

periodically reupdating the activation rules at the activation server; and

receiving, at the machine, the reupdated activation rules, from the activation server, after each periodic reupdate.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises, if the product key is invalid for the newly-collected machine configuration information, invalidating the software application to prevent continued access to the software application.

20. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in claim 11 , wherein the updated activation rules are received in a signed license file that is configured to prevent a user of the machine from undetectably altering the updated activation rules in the signed license file.
