Abstract

A composite material for positioning in the anatomy to form a selected function therein. The composite may be resorbable over a selected period of time. The composite may allow for selected bone ingrowth as absorption of the composite occurs.

Claims (21)

1. A resorbable implant, comprising:

a single member comprising a continuous formation, comprising a plurality of continuous channels forming a first and second sub-plurality of a plurality of pores of a porous first material resorbable into an anatomy at a first rate to allow bone ingrowth; and

a second material that is a resorbable polymer for resorbing into an anatomy at a second rate less than the first rate to support the bone ingrowth such that the resorbable polymer defines a support for the bone ingrowth to maintain a selected strength of the member for a predetermined time period; wherein the first material and the second material are distinct and separately combined into the single member by positioning the second material within a structure of the formation of the first material, so as to substantially fill at least the first sub-plurality of the plurality of pores of the porous material.

2. The resorbable implant of claim 1 , wherein the first sub-plurality of the plurality of pores has a macroporosity of a first average size that is larger than the second sub-plurality of the plurality of pores having a microporosity.

3. The resorbable implant of claim 1 , wherein the member is a composite comprising a porous matrix formed with the first material comprising an absorbable ceramic and the second material comprising a polymer injected into the first sub-plurality of pores in the porous matrix;

wherein the second sub-plurality of pores allows fluids to flow into an interior of the member.

4. The resorbable implant of claim 3 , wherein the porous matrix comprises a structure of calcium carbonate defining the plurality of pores;

wherein inner walls of the first sub-plurality of pores and the second sub-plurality of pores are substantially coated with a hydroxyapatite.

5. The resorbable implant of claim 3 , wherein the second sub-plurality of pores includes an average pore size of less than about 1 μm;

wherein the fluids flow through the second sub-plurality of pores to allow a degradation of the composite when in an anatomy.

6. The resorbable implant of claim 1 , wherein the second material comprises a polymer chosen from polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, and combinations thereof.

7. The resorbable implant of claim 1 , wherein the continuous channels extend from a first surface of the structure to a second surface of the structure.

8. The resorbable implant of claim 1 , wherein the second material is about 55 wt % to about 65 wt % of the single member.

9. A single member resorbable implant, comprising:

a continuous formation of a first material resorbable into an anatomy at a first rate to allow bone ingrowth, wherein the first material has a first plurality of channels having a first average size and a second plurality of channels having a second average size that is smaller than the first average size; and

a second material that is a resorbable polymer for resorbing into an anatomy at a second rate less than the first rate to support the bone ingrowth such that the resorbable polymer defines a support for the bone ingrowth to maintain a selected strength of the member for a predetermined time period; wherein the first material and the second material are distinct and separately combined into the single member by positioning the second material within a structure of the formation of the first material.

10. The single member resorbable implant of claim 9 , wherein the second material is positioned in the first plurality of channels.

11. The single member resorbable implant of claim 9 , wherein the second plurality of channels remain open.

12. The single member resorbable implant of claim 9 , wherein the second material is about 55 wt % to about 65 wt % of the single member.

13. The single member resorbable implant of claim 9 , wherein the second average size of the second plurality of channels is about 0.01 μm to about 1 μm.

14. The single member resorbable implant of claim 9 , wherein the second material is a polymer chosen from polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, and combinations thereof.
