Abstract

A moving cavity motor or pump, such as a mud motor, comprising: a rotor, a stator, and one or more apparatus for constraining (i.e., controlling or limiting) the movement of the rotor relative to the stator.

Claims (27)

1. A mud motor assembly comprising a progressive cavity motor having a proximal end and a distal end, the progressive cavity motor comprising:

a stator comprising:

a metal housing;

a first elastomer material positioned within the metal housing; and

a first rigid material positioned radially-inward from and at least partially covering the first elastomer material; and

a rotor comprising:

a metal core;

a second elastomer material positioned around the metal core; and

a second rigid material positioned around the second elastomer material, wherein the first rigid material of the stator is contacting the second rigid material of the rotor.

2. The mud motor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first rigid material of the stator comprises at least one of a metal, a composite, a ceramic, a hard plastic, or polycrystalline diamond.

3. The mud motor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second rigid material is different than the first rigid material.

4. The mud motor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second rigid material of the rotor comprises at least one of a metal, a composite, a ceramic, a hard plastic, or polycrystalline diamond.

5. The mud motor assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second rigid materials are coated or treated to reduce at least one of friction and wear.

6. A method of drilling a wellbore through a subterranean formation, the method comprising:

passing a drilling fluid through the mud motor assembly as claimed in claim 1 ; and

drilling the formation.

7. The mud motor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second rigid material is the same as the first rigid material.

8. The mud motor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first rigid material is the same as the second rigid material.

9. A mud motor assembly comprising a progressive cavity motor, the progressive cavity motor comprising:

a stator and a rotor,

wherein the stator has a profile including peak sections and valley sections with the peak sections including a rigid material and the valley sections including a resilient material, wherein alternating sections of the rigid material and the resilient material form an internal cavity of the stator, and

wherein the stator and the rotor each have a contact surface formed at least in part from the rigid material.

10. The mud motor assembly of claim 9 , wherein the rigid material comprises at least one of a metal, a composite, a ceramic, a hard plastic, and polycrystalline diamond.

11. The mud motor assembly of claim 9 , wherein the rigid material comprises at least one of a metal, a composite, a ceramic, a hard plastic, and polycrystalline diamond.

12. The mud motor assembly of claim 9 , wherein the contact surface of at least one of the stator and the rotor are coated or treated to reduce at least one of friction and wear.

13. The mud motor assembly of claim 9 , further comprising at least one apparatus constraining a radial and/or tangential movement of the rotor relative to the stator that is located within an adjustable bend housing operatively connected to an end of the motor assembly.

14. The mud motor assembly of claim 9 , wherein the contact surfaces of the stator and the rotor are formed from the same material.
