Abstract

A light for use in high ambient pressure environments having a hollow housing comprising a front and rear section and at least one LED is disclosed. A transparent window may extend across an aperture in the housing and a seal may be positioned between the front and rear sections.

Claims (30)

1. A light fixture for deep submersible use, comprising:

a housing having a substantially spherical shape and structured to withstand exterior pressures corresponding to liquid depths of at least 1400 meters and including an aperture, the housing comprising at least a front section with the aperture therein and a rear section;

a transparent pressure bearing window extending across the aperture; and

one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) disposed within the housing and adjacent to the aperture so as to pass light through the aperture and transparent pressure bearing window.

2. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the LEDs are disposed on a printed circuit board positioned within the front section of the housing and adjacent to the window.

3. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the LEDs include a plurality of LEDs and the printed circuit board comprises a metal clad PCB (MCPCB).

4. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the front section and the rear section of the housing are joined with an external coupling element and sealed with an O-ring.

5. The light fixture of claim 4 , wherein the coupling element is a threaded coupler.

6. The light fixture of claim 4 , wherein a PCB is suspended within the housing by the coupling element.

7. The light fixture of claim 1 , further including a mount coupled to the housing.

8. The light fixture of claim 1 , further including a crash guard having a plurality of holes for allowing ambient water to flow through.

9. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the window comprises sapphire.

10. The light fixture of claim 1 , further comprising a phase change material to thermally couple heat generated from the LEDs to the housing.

11. A light fixture for deep submersible environment, comprising:

a substantially spherical outer metallic housing having an aperture formed in a front side thereof, the substantially spherical outer metallic housing comprising at least two sections including a front substantially hemispherical section and a second substantially hemispherical section, each having a mating face, assembled such that the mating face of the first substantially hemispherical section abuts against the mating face of the second substantially hemispherical section, and joined by a coupling element to define a forward pressure housing and an aft pressure housing within the substantially spherical outer metallic housing;

a transparent window extending across the aperture and sealed to the forward pressure housing; and

one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) disposed within the forward pressure housing.

12. The light fixture of claim 11 , further comprising a sealing element disposed between the forward pressure housing and the aft pressure housing.

13. The light fixture of claim 11 , further comprising a sealing element disposed between the transparent window and surface of the forward pressure housing to provide a water-tight seal.

The light fixture of claim 11 , wherein the LEDs are disposed on an outward facing side of a printed circuit board (PCB) positioned within the forward pressure housing, wherein the PCB is mounted substantially tangentially within the aperture formed in the front side of the substantially spherical outer metallic housing.

15. The light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the PCB is suspended within the forward pressure housing by the coupling element.

16. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is in a stepped shape to form a cavity into which the LEDs are inserted.

17. The light fixture of claim 1 , further comprising an underwater electrical connector sealed to the aft pressure housing by a connector O-ring.

18. The light fixture of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of LED driver circuits, associated with the LEDs, comprising at least an upper LED driver disposed in the forward pressure housing, and a lower LED driver disposed in the aft pressure housing.

19. The light fixture of claim 18 , wherein the lower LED driver is mounted to a surface of a thermally-conductive plug that thermally connects to components of the substantially spherical outer metallic housing to dissipate heat from an interior of the light fixture.

20. A light fixture for deep submersible environment, comprising:

a housing structured to withstand exterior pressures corresponding to liquid depths of at least 1400 meters, the housing having an aperture formed in a front side thereof, the housing and comprising a front half section and a rear half section joined by a threaded coupling element;

a transparent window extending across the aperture;

one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) disposed on an outward facing side of a printed circuit board (PCB) positioned substantially tangentially within the aperture formed in the front side of the housing; and

an LED driver circuit, associated with the LEDs, suspended by the threaded coupling element within the housing, wherein heat generated from the LED driver circuit is conducted laterally through the PCB and the housing into a colder exterior liquid environment.
