Abstract

An apparatus includes a rigid support and a first cantilever including a first optical fiber and a first rigid ribbon. The first optical fiber and the first ribbon, together include a first neutral surface. The first optical fiber is connected to the rigid support. The first optical fiber includes at least one first wave-guiding core running parallel to the first neutral surface. Each of the at least one first wave-guiding core includes at least one first reflector. The first rigid ribbon is affixed to the first optical fiber and to said first rigid support. The apparatus further includes a first membrane surrounding the first cantilever.

Claims (41)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a rigid support;

a first cantilever comprising a first optical fiber and a first rigid ribbon, said first optical fiber and said first ribbon together comprising a first neutral surface, said first optical fiber being connected to said rigid support, said first optical fiber comprising at least one first wave-guiding core running parallel to and at a distance from the first neutral surface, each of the at least one first wave-guiding core comprising at least one first reflector, said first rigid ribbon being affixed to said first optical fiber and to said first rigid support; and

a first membrane surrounding said first cantilever.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said rigid ribbon comprises one of a metal and a plastic.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said metal comprises one of aluminum, steel, copper, and brass.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a second cantilever comprising a second optical fiber and a second rigid ribbon, said second optical fiber and said second ribbon together comprising a second neutral surface, said second optical fiber being connected to said rigid support, said second optical fiber and said second ribbon being oriented perpendicular to said first optical fiber and said first ribbon, said second optical fiber comprising at least one second wave-guiding core running parallel to the second neutral surface and located at a distance from the second neutral surface, each of the at least one second wave-guiding core comprising at least one second fiber Bragg grating, said second rigid ribbon being affixed to said second optical fiber and to said second rigid support.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , further comprising

a third cantilever comprising a third optical fiber and a third rigid ribbon, said third optical fiber and said third ribbon together comprising a third neutral surface, said third optical fiber being connected to said rigid support, said third optical fiber and said, third ribbon being oriented perpendicular to said first optical fiber and said first ribbon and parallel to said second optical fiber and said second ribbon, said third optical fiber comprising at least one third wave-guiding core running parallel to the third neutral surface and located at a distance from the third neutral surface, each of the at least one third wave-guiding core comprising at least one third fiber Bragg grating, said third rigid ribbon being affixed to said third optical fiber and to said third rigid support.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said first membrane surrounds said second cantilever and said third cantilever.

7. The apparatus according to claim 5 , further comprising:

a second membrane surrounding said second cantilever; and

a third membrane surrounding said third cantilever.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one first reflector comprises at least one fiber Bragg grating and a mirror,

wherein said at least one first reflector is located one of proximate to where said first optical fiber penetrates said rigid support and proximate to an end of said first optical fiber distal to said rigid support.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one first reflector comprises at least one fiber Bragg grating, and at least one thin film reflector,

wherein said at least one first reflector is located one of proximate to where said first optical fiber penetrates said rigid support and proximate to an end of said first optical fiber distal to said rigid support.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one first reflector comprises a first fiber Bragg grating, and a second fiber Bragg grating,

wherein said first fiber Bragg grating is located proximate to where said first optical fiber penetrates said rigid support and said second fiber Bragg grating is located proximate to an end of said first optical fiber distal to said rigid support.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said rigid support comprises one of a metal, a plastic, and a glass.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein said metal comprises one of aluminum, steel, copper, and brass.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a rigid support;

a first cantilever comprising a first optical fiber and a first rigid ribbon, said first optical fiber and said first ribbon together comprising a first neutral surface, said first optical fiber being connected to said rigid support, said first optical fiber comprising at least one first wave-guiding core running parallel to the first neutral surface, each of the at least one first wave-guiding core comprising at least one first reflector, said first rigid ribbon being affixed to said first optical fiber and to said first rigid support;

a first membrane surrounding said first cantilever; and

a second cantilever comprising a second optical fiber and a second rigid ribbon, said second optical fiber and said second ribbon together comprising a second neutral surface, said second optical fiber being connected to said rigid support, said second optical fiber and said second ribbon being oriented perpendicular to said first optical fiber and said first ribbon, said second optical fiber comprising at least one second wave-guiding core running parallel to the second neutral surface and located at a distance from the second neutral surface, each of the at least one second wave-guiding core comprising at least one second fiber Bragg grating, said second rigid ribbon being affixed to said second optical fiber arid to said second rigid support.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , further comprising

a third cantilever comprising a third optical fiber and a third rigid ribbon, said third optical fiber and said third ribbon together comprising a third neutral surface, said third optical fiber being connected to said rigid support, said third optical fiber and said third ribbon being oriented perpendicular to said first optical fiber and said first ribbon and parallel to said second optical fiber and said second ribbon, said third optical fiber comprising at least one third wave-guiding core running parallel to the third neutral surface and located at a distance from the third neutral surface, each of the at least one third wave-guiding core comprising at least one third fiber Bragg grating, said third rigid ribbon being affixed to said third optical fiber and to said third rigid support.

15. The apparatus according to claim 14 , where said first membrane surrounds said second cantilever and said third cantilever.

16. The apparatus according to claim 14 , further comprising:

a second membrane surrounding said second cantilever; and

a third membrane surrounding said third cantilever.

17. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said at east one first reflector comprises at least one fiber Bragg grating and a mirror,

wherein said at least one first reflector is located one of proximate to where said first optical fiber penetrates said rigid support and proximate to an end of said first optical fiber distal to said rigid support.

18. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said at least one first reflector comprises at least one fiber Bragg grating, and at least one thin film reflector,

wherein said at least one first reflector is located one of proximate to where said first optical fiber penetrates said rigid support and proximate to an end of said first optical fiber distal to said rigid support.

19. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said at least one first reflector comprises a first fiber Bragg grating, and a second fiber Bragg grating,

wherein said first fiber Bragg grating is located proximate to where said first optical fiber penetrates said rigid support and said second fiber Bragg grating is located proximate to an end of said first optical fiber distal to said rigid support.

20. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said rigid ribbon comprises one of a metal and a plastic,

wherein said metal comprises one of aluminum, steel, copper, and brass.
