Abstract

There is provided a light-guide, compact collimating optical device, including a light-guide having a light-waves entrance surface, a light-waves exit surface and a plurality of external surfaces, a light-waves reflecting surface carried by the light-guide at one of the external surfaces, two retardation plates carried by light-guides on a portion of the external surfaces, a light-waves polarizing beamsplitter disposed at an angle to one of the light-waves entrance or exit surfaces, and a light-waves collimating component covering a portion of one of the retardation plates. A system including the optical device and a substrate, is also provided.

Claims (12)

1. An optical system, comprising:

an optical device for collimating polarized light-waves comprising an arrangement of optical elements, the optical device having at least one light-waves entrance surface and at least one light-waves exit surface;

a light-transmitting substrate having at least two major surfaces parallel to each other, edges and a light-waves input aperture;

the light-waves input aperture of the light-transmitting substrate being located adjacent to the exit surface of the collimating optical device;

an optical element for coupling the collimated light waves into the substrate by internal reflection;

at least one partially reflecting surface located in the substrate for coupling the light waves out of the substrate, the partially reflecting surface being non-parallel to the major surfaces of the substrate;

at least one display light source for producing the polarized light-waves, the display light source located adjacent to the entrance surface of the optical device; and

a half-wavelength retardation plate positioned between the display light source and the entrance surface of the optical device for rotating the polarization of the polarized light-waves in the optical system.

2. The optical system according to claim 1 , wherein the light-waves produced by the display light source are linearly p-polarized and the light-waves collimated by the collimating optical device are linearly s-polarized.

3. The optical system according to claim 1 , wherein the half-wavelength retardation plate is a dynamic plate switchable between off and on positions.

4. The optical system according to claim 1 , wherein the half-wavelength retardation plate is synchronized with the display light source.

5. The optical system according to claim 1 , wherein the light-waves produced by the display light source are linearly s-polarized and the light-waves collimated by the collimating optical device are linearly p-polarized.
