Abstract

Disclosed herein are corrosion-resistant composites. In particular, the composites can include a piezoelectric material embedded within a binding medium that can impede or inhibit the corrosive effects caused by salts and acids. Also disclosed herein are methods of making the composites and methods of protecting a concrete or concrete-related substrate from corrosion.

Claims (31)

1. A corrosion-resistant composition, comprising:

a concrete or a concrete-related substrate; and

a corrosion-resistant composite comprising a piezoelectric material, a binding medium that includes cement, and a conductivity enhancer,

wherein the corrosion-resistant composite is located only on a surface of the concrete or concrete-related substrate.

2. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the piezoelectric material is selected from the group consisting of a piezoelectric ceramic, a piezoelectric polymer, a piezoelectric crystal, a piezoelectric composite, and any combination thereof.

3. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the piezoelectric material is selected from the group consisting of tourmaline, lead zirconate titanate (PZT), quartz, and any combination thereof.

4. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the conductivity enhancer comprises graphite particles.

5. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the corrosion-resistant composite contains the conductivity enhancer in a mass percent of about 5%, based on the total mass of the corrosion-resistant composite.

6. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the conductivity enhancer is selected from the group consisting of carbon fiber materials, metals, and any combination thereof.

7. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the corrosion-resistant composite contains the conductivity enhancer in a mass percent of about 3% to about 10%, based on the total mass of the corrosion-resistant composite.

8. The corrosion-resistant composition of claim 1 , wherein the concrete or concrete-related substrate is at least partially covered by the corrosion-resistant composite.

9. A method of protecting a concrete or concrete-related substrate from corrosion, the method comprising:

combining a piezoelectric material, a binding medium that includes cement, and a conductivity enhancer to form a mixture;

placing the mixture on only a surface of the concrete or concrete-related substrate;

polarizing the piezoelectric material embedded within the mixture; and

curing the mixture to form a corrosion protective coating on the concrete or concrete-related substrate.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises applying external pressure on the protective coating to trigger polarization of the piezoelectric material embedded within the protective coating.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the piezoelectric material comprises tourmaline particles.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the conductivity enhancer comprises graphite.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the concrete or concrete-related substrate is protected from corrosion caused by salt or acid.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the concrete or concrete-related substrate is protected from corrosion caused by ions selected from the group consisting of Cl − , SO 4 2− , and H + .

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the concrete or concrete-related substrate is protected from corrosion caused by carbonic acid.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the piezoelectric material is selected from the group consisting of a piezoelectric ceramic, a piezoelectric crystal, a piezoelectric polymer, a piezoelectric composite, and any combination thereof.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the piezoelectric material is selected from the group consisting of tourmaline, lead zirconate titanate (PZT), quartz, and any combination thereof.

18. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mixture has the piezoelectric material in a mass percent of about 50% to about 70%, based on the total mass of the mixture.

19. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mixture contains the conductivity enhancer in a mass percent of about 1% to about 10%, based on the total mass of the mixture.

20. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mixture contains the binding medium in a mass percent of about 20% to about 50%, based on the total mass of the mixture.

21. The method of claim 9 , wherein the conductivity enhancer is selected from the group consisting of carbon fiber materials, metals, or any combination thereof.

22. The method of claim 9 , wherein the combining comprises grinding the piezoelectric material, the binding medium, and/or the conductivity enhancer in a grinding medium.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the grinding medium contains at least about 99% ethanol by volume.

24. The method of claim 9 , wherein the polarizing comprises applying an external electric field to the mixture.
