Abstract

An apparatus for encoding a video includes: a predictor to predict a current block by using a plurality of prediction unit types and generate one or more predicted blocks; a subtracting unit to generate a residual block by the subtracting the predicted blocks from the current block; a transformer to generate a frequency transform block by transforming the residual block; a quantizer to generate a quantized frequency transform block by quantizing the frequency transform block; and an encoder to encode the quantized frequency transform block into a bitstream. When the quantized frequency transform block for one of the prediction unit types has all zero coefficients, the predictor terminates predicting the current block by using the remainder of the prediction unit types and determines the prediction unit type with said all zero coefficients as the prediction unit type for the current block.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus comprising an encoder and for encoding a current block by sequentially applying a plurality of prediction unit types to the current block in a predetermined order, the apparatus comprising:

a predictor configured to select one of the prediction unit types in the predetermined order, wherein each of the prediction unit types indicates a partition type in which the current block is partitioned into one or more prediction units,

generate one or more predicted blocks of a current block by partitioning the current block according to the selected prediction unit type;

a subtracting unit configured to generate a residual block by the subtracting the predicted blocks from the current block;

a transformer configured to generate a frequency transform block by transforming the residual block;

a quantizer configured to generate a quantized frequency transform block by quantizing the frequency transform block; and

wherein, when the quantized frequency transform block generated by the selected prediction unit type has all zero coefficients,

the predictor is configured to terminate applying, to the current block, remaining prediction unit types subsequent to the selected prediction unit type in the predetermined order, and to determine the selected prediction unit type as a prediction unit type for the current block, and

the encoder is configured to encode, into the bitstream, information indicating that the quantized frequency transform block generated by the selected prediction unit type has all zero coefficients.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the encoder is configured to further encode information indicating the prediction unit type for the current block into the bitstream.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, when a prediction unit type corresponding to a quantized frequency transform block having at least one non-zero coefficient is determined as the prediction unit type of the current block, the encoder is configured to further encode, into the bitstream, split information of the quantized frequency transform block having at least one non-zero coefficient and quantized transform coefficients.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the encoder is configured to further encode a coded block flag for a subblock divided from the quantized frequency transform block having at least one non-zero coefficient, the coded block flag indicating whether the subblock has all zero coefficients.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of prediction unit types are variably determined on the size of the current block.

6. A method for encoding a current block by sequentially applying a plurality of prediction unit types to the current block in a predetermined order, comprising:

selecting one of the prediction unit types in the predetermined order, wherein each of the prediction unit types indicates a partition type in which the current block is partitioned into one or more prediction units;

predicting the current block by partitioning the current block using the selected prediction unit type and generating one or more predicted blocks;

generating a residual block by the subtracting the one or more predicted blocks from the current block;

generating a frequency transform block by transforming the residual block;

generating a quantized frequency transform block by quantizing the frequency transform block; and

when the quantized frequency transform block generated by the selected prediction unit type has all zero coefficients,

terminating application of remaining prediction unit types to the current block, wherein the remaining prediction unit types are subsequent to the selected prediction unit type in the predetermined order,

determining the selected prediction unit type as a prediction unit type for the current block, and

encoding, into the bitstream, information indicating that the quantized frequency transform block generated by the selected prediction unit type has all zero coefficients.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprises

encoding information indicating the selected prediction unit type into the bitstream.

8. The method of claim 6 , when a prediction unit type corresponding to a quantized frequency transform block having at least one non-zero coefficient is determined as the prediction unit type of the current block, further comprises

encoding, into the bitstream, split information of the quantized frequency transform block having at least one non-zero coefficient and quantized transform coefficients.

9. The method of claim 8 ,

further comprises

encoding a coded block flag for a subblock divided from the quantized frequency transform block having at least one non-zero coefficient, the coded block flag indicating whether the subblock has all zero coefficients.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of prediction unit types are variably determined on the size of the current block.
