Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example avoiding data copy and task switching by processing protocol headers of network PDUs as a serial tape to be processed in order such as by a single method. Other processing includes reducing stages and simplifying protocol processing and multiplexing during network communications. Address changing in an active network can be implemented by assigning multiple addresses to an entity so that a new address can replace the old address. Peer-to-peer application searching can be performed among networks that can be accessible or non-accessible networks. Utilizing anycast sets that include selected and alternative addresses to enable immediate or near immediate alternative route selection on failure or congestion. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

determining, by a system including a processor, an address change is desired for an Inter-Process Communication (IPC) process, wherein the IPC process has been assigned an old address, wherein the old address is only known in a layer, and wherein the IPC process has an application name that is known globally; and

assigning, by the system, a new address to the IPC process, wherein the new address is only known in the layer;

wherein the IPC process utilizes the new address as a source address in any Data Transfer Process (DTP) flows originating from the IPC process.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the IPC process updates a directory with a mapping to the new address responsive to any directory entries that map application names to the old address.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the IPC process does not delete mappings to the old address.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the IPC process causes a routing update to occur by advertising that is on a path to the new address.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the IPC process ceases advertising as a route to the old address.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein when current IPC processes, which the IPC process has DTP flows with, receive a DTP PDU with a destination address of the current IPC processes, the current IPC processes determine if a source address in the PDU has changed.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein responsive to the source address in the PDU changing, address value replacement is performed.

8. A system comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

determining an address change is desired for an Inter-Process Communication (IPC) process, wherein the IPC process has been assigned an old address, and wherein the IPC process has an application name that is known globally; and

assigning a new address to the IPC process,

wherein the IPC process utilizes the new address as a source address in any Data Transfer Process (DTP) flows originating from the IPC process.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the old address is only known in a layer, wherein the new address is only known in the layer, wherein the IPC process updates a directory with a mapping to the new address responsive to any directory entries that map application names to the old address.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the IPC process does not delete mappings to the old address.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the IPC process causes a routing update to occur by advertising that is on a path to the new address.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the IPC process ceases advertising as a route to the old address.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein when current IPC processes, which the IPC process has DTP flows with, receive a DTP PDU with a destination address of the current IPC processes, the current IPC processes determine if a source address in the PDU has changed.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein responsive to the source address in the PDU changing, address value replacement is performed.

15. A machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system of a first communication device that includes a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

determining an address change is desired for an Inter-Process Communication (IPC) process, wherein the IPC process has been assigned an old address, and wherein the IPC process has an application name that is known globally; and

assigning a new address to the IPC process;

wherein the IPC process utilizes the new address as a source address in any Data Transfer Process (DTP) flows originating from the IPC process.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the old address is only known in a layer, wherein the new address is only known in the layer, wherein the IPC process updates a directory with a mapping to the new address responsive to any directory entries that map application names to the old address.

17. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the IPC process does not delete mappings to the old address.

18. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the IPC process causes a routing update to occur by advertising that is on a path to the new address.

19. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the IPC process ceases advertising as a route to the old address.

20. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein when current IPC processes, which the IPC process has DTP flows with, receive a DTP PDU with a destination address of the current IPC processes, the current IPC processes determine if a source address in the PDU has changed.
