Abstract

The monitor system for an anhydrous ammonia fertilizer injection system includes a manifold with a plurality of discharge lines connected to soil engaging knives. A temperature sensor is mounted in each discharge line. The temperature of fertilizer in each discharge line is measures and transmitted to a microprocessor in a console. The temperature in a discharge line is compared with the average temperature in the other discharge lines. This comparison is made for each discharge line connected to a manifold to determine the temperature variations. The variations are compared to a temperature variation number provided by the operator. If an excessive variation occurs a warning is provided. A console screen graph shows which discharge line needs inspection.

Claims (21)

1. An anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor comprising:

a fertilizer manifold having at least one fertilizer inlet port and a plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports;

a plurality of injector knives mounted on a tool bar;

a plurality of flexible plastic tubular distribution lines with a distribution line inside diameter and a distribution line length that are substantially the same and each of which include a proximal line portion with an inlet end connected to one of the plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports and a distal line portion with an outlet end connected to one of the plurality of injector knives;

a plurality of temperature sensor assemblies each including an aluminum body with an inlet fitting, an outlet fitting, an anhydrous ammonia passage extending through the aluminum body including the inlet fitting and the outlet fitting, the anhydrous ammonia passage having a passage diameter that is substantially the same as the distribution line inside diameter, a sensor cavity in the aluminum body with a cavity bottom, a temperature sensor mounted on the cavity bottom in the sensor cavity and spaced from the anhydrous ammonia passage, a first lead attached to the temperature sensor and wherein the inlet fitting of each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies is attached to the proximal line portion attached to one of the plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports and separates the aluminum body of the temperature sensor assembly from the manifold discharge port a selected distance, and the outlet fitting of the temperature sensor assembly attached to the distal line portion; and

a monitor connected to the first lead of each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies and displaying temperature sensed by each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies.

2. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor set forth in claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies has a rate of thermal conductivity of aluminum.

3. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor set forth in claim 1 , wherein the selected distance between the manifold discharge port and the inlet fitting of the aluminum body is at least three inches.

4. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor set forth in claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of tubular distribution lines including the proximal line portion, the anhydrous ammonia passage through the aluminum body of one of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies and the distal line portion extend from one of the plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports to one of the plurality of injector knives and the plurality of tubular distribution lines have a substantially equal length.

5. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the proximal line portion has a rate of thermal conductivity of a flexible plastic line that forms each of the plurality of flexible plastic tubular distribution lines.

6. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the monitor indicates which lines have a deviation in the temperature measured that indicates unequal fertilizer flow discharge rate between the plurality of tubular distribution lines.

7. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor set forth in claim 1 , wherein the monitor identifies each of the plurality of flexible plastic tubular distribution lines and indicates the temperature measured in each of the identified distribution lines.

8. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor set forth in claim 7 , wherein each of the plurality of flexible plastic tubular distribution lines displayed on the monitor are shown in an assigned color and each of the plurality of flexible plastic tubular distribution lines has a different assigned color.

9. The anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor set forth in claim 1 including a second lead attached to the temperature sensor that is a ground lead.

10. An anhydrous ammonia fertilizer distribution line monitor comprising:

a fertilizer manifold having at least one fertilizer inlet port and a plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports;

a plurality of injector knives mounted on a tool bar;

a plurality of flexible plastic tubular distribution lines with a distribution line inside diameter and a distribution line length that are substantially the same and each of which include a proximal line portion with an inlet end connected to one of the plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports and a distal line portion with an outlet end connected to one of the plurality of injector knives;

a plurality of temperature sensor assemblies each including an aluminum body with an inlet fitting, an outlet fitting, an anhydrous ammonia passage extending through the aluminum body including the inlet fitting and the outlet fitting, the anhydrous ammonia passage having a passage diameter that is substantially the same as the distribution line inside diameter, a sensor cavity in the aluminum body with a cavity bottom, a temperature sensor mounted on the cavity bottom in the sensor cavity and spaced from the anhydrous ammonia passage, a first lead attached to the temperature sensor, a second lead that grounds the temperature sensor and wherein the inlet fitting of each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies is attached to the proximal line portion attached to one of the plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports and separates the aluminum body of the temperature sensor assembly from the manifold discharge port at least three inches, and the outlet fitting of the temperature sensor assembly attached to the distal line portion;

wherein each of the plurality of tubular distribution lines including the proximal line portion, the anhydrous ammonia passage through the aluminum body of one of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies and the distal line portion extend from one of the plurality of fertilizer manifold discharge ports to one of the plurality of injector knives and the plurality of tubular distribution lines have a substantially equal length; and

a monitor connected to the first lead of each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies and displaying a temperature sensed by each of the plurality of temperature sensor assemblies.
