Abstract

A telecommunication and multimedia management apparatus and method that supports voice and other media communications and that enables users to: (i) participate in multiple conversation modes, including live phone calls, conference calls, instant voice messaging or tactical communications; (ii) review the messages of conversations in either a live mode or a time-shifted mode and to seamlessly transition back and forth between the two modes; (iii) participate in multiple conversations either concurrently or simultaneously; (iv) archive the messages of conversations for later review or processing; and (v) persistently store media either created or received on the communication devices of users. The latter feature enables users to generate or review media when either disconnected from the network or network conditions are poor and to optimize the delivery of media over the network based on network conditions and the intention of the users participating in conversations.

Claims (47)

1. A live video messaging system implemented on a communication network, comprising:

a node on the communication network, the node arranged to:

receive an identifier associated with a live video message transmitted over the communication network from a first client communication device, the identifier identifying a recipient of the live video message;

ascertain, in response to receipt of the identifier, an IP address for a second client communication device on the communication network associated with the recipient;

persistently store video media of the live video message as the video media is received at the node from the first client communication device; and

transmit the video media of the live video message to the second client communication device using the IP address, the transmission enabling the video media of the live video message to be rendered live at the second client communication device as the video media is transmitted by the first client communication device and received, stored and transmitted by the node on the communication network,

wherein the transmission of the video media of the live video message supports live video messaging between the first client communication device and the second client communication device without first establishing an end-to-end connection over the communication network between the first and second client communication devices.

2. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the node is further configured to deliver the live video message out of persistent storage to the second client communication device.

The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the first client communication device is configured to run an application which: (i) enables a user to define the recipient; (ii) communicates the identifier identifying the recipient to the node; (iii) creates the video media of the live video message using the first client communication device; and (iv) transmits the live video media to the node over the communication network as the video media is created.

4. The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to start the transmission of the video media to the node before a complete delivery path to the second client communication devices is known.

5. The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to start the transmission of the video media to the node independent of the node ascertaining the IP address for the second client communication device.

6. The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to start the transmission of the video media to the node regardless of whether the second client communication device is available or not available on the communication network.

7. The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to locally store the video media of the live video message on the first client communication device.

8. The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application enables the user of the first client communication device to define the recipient or a group of recipients for receipt of the live video message.

9. The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to optionally:

render incoming video media associated with an incoming video message as the incoming video media is received from the node on the communication network and transmitted by a remote client communication device; or

render the incoming video media associated with the incoming voice media in a time-shifted mode.

10. The live video messaging system of claim 9 , wherein the application is further configured to store, on the first client communication device, the incoming video media associated with the incoming live video message.

The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to cooperate with a video creation element provided on or used in association with the first client communication device to transmit the live video media of the video message as the video media is created.

The live video messaging system of claim 3 , wherein the application is further configured to render incoming video media associated with an incoming video message as the incoming video media is received from the node on the communication network and transmitted by a remote client communication device.

13. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , further providing a notice to the second client communication device notifying the recipient of the live video message.

14. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the live video message contains a plurality of identifiers and the video message is targeted for a plurality of recipients identified by the plurality of identifiers respectfully.

15. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , further comprising a presence element configured to provide presence information indicating if the recipient is present on the communication network.

The live video system of claim 1 , wherein the node on the communication network is further configured to deliver the video message to the recipient out of storage if the second client communication device associated with the recipient was not available on the communication network when the video message was transmitted by the first client communication device.

17. The live video system of claim 1 , wherein the node is further configured to progressively receive, persistently store and progressively transmit the video media of the live video message as the video media is received from the first client communication device.

The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the video media of the live video message is transmitted over the communication network by the node as (i) the video media is created and transmitted by the first communication device and (ii) rendered on the second client communication device.

19. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the IP address for the second client communication device is ascertained from a lookup result of the identifier associated with the recipient.

20. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the IP address for the second client communication device is ascertained using the identifier associated with the recipient.

21. The live video messaging of claim 1 , wherein the IP address is a current IP address of the second client communication device for identifying and addressing the second client communication device on the communication network.

22. The live video messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the first client communication device is further configured to run an application, the application configured to:

generate a notification for a second video message; and

enable live rendering of received video media associated with the second video message as the video media is (i) received at the first client communication device from the node on the communication network and (ii) transmitted by a second client communication device.

23. The live video messaging system of claim 22 , wherein the application further enables the rendering of the received video media of the second video message from storage in a time-shifted mode.

24. The live video messaging system of 23 , wherein the storage is maintained on the first client communication device.

25. The live video messaging system of claim 23 , wherein the storage is maintained at the node and is served to the first client communication device.

26. A live video messaging system implemented on a communication network, comprising:

a node on the communication network, the node arranged to:

receive an identifier associated with a live video message transmitted over the communication network from a first client communication device, the identifier identifying a recipient of the live video message;

ascertain, in response to receipt of the identifier, an IP address for a second client communication device on the communication network associated with the recipient;

persistently store video media of the live video message as the video media is received at the node from the first client communication device; and

transmit the video media of the live video message to the second client communication device using the IP address, the transmission enabling the video media of the live video message to be rendered live at the second client communication device as the video media is transmitted by the first client communication device and received, stored and transmitted by the node on the communication network,

wherein the transmission of the video media of the live video message supports live video messaging between the first client communication device and the second client communication device without first establishing an end-to-end connection over the communication network between the first and second client communication devices

wherein, once the rendering of the video media of the video message starts at the second communication device, the rendering of the video media of the video message is live, delayed by the inherent latency on the communication network between the first client communication device and the second client communication device.

27. The live video messaging system of claim 26 , wherein the node on the communication network is further configured to deliver the video message out of storage.

The live video messaging system of claim 26 , wherein the video media of the live video message is transmitted over the communication network by the node as (i) the video media is created and transmitted by the first communication device and (ii) rendered on the second client communication device.

29. The live video messaging system of claim 26 , wherein the IP address is ascertained using the identifier and is a current IP address of the second client communication device for identifying and addressing the second client communication device on the communication network.

30. The live video messaging system of claim 26 , wherein the first client communication device is configured to run an application which: (i) enables a user to define the recipient; (ii) communicates the identifier identifying the recipient to the node; (iii) creates the video media of the live video message using the first client communication device; and (iv) transmits the live video media to the node over the communication network as the video media is created.
