Abstract

A process to recover hydrocarbons from a hydrocarbon reservoir, namely bitumen (API<10; in situ viscosity>100,000 c.p.), said process comprising; establishing a horizontal production well in said reservoir; separately injecting an oxygen-containing gas and steam into the hydrocarbon reservoir continuously to cause heated hydrocarbons and water to drain, by gravity, to the horizontal production well, the ratio of oxygen/steam injectant gases being controlled in the range from 0.05 to 1.00 (v/v). removing non-condensable combustion gases from at least one separate vent-gas well, which is established in the reservoir to avoid undesirable pressures in the reservoir.

Claims (32)

1. A method of producing bitumen from a subterranean formation, comprising:

injecting oxidant into a bitumen-comprising zone of the reservoir such that combustion of bitumen of the bitumen-comprising zone is effected by the injected oxidant;

injecting steam into the bitumen-comprising zone;

wherein:

the injecting of the steam is such that the bitumen-comprising zone is sufficiently heated such that the combustion includes high temperature oxidation such that heat energy is produced; and

mobilization of residual bitumen of the bitumen-comprising zone is effected by the injected steam and the produced heat energy of the high temperature oxidation; and

producing the mobilized residual bitumen;

wherein, during a first time interval, the injecting of the oxidant and the injecting of the steam is effected simultaneously, and the ratio of the molar rate of supply of oxidant to the molar rate of supply of steam is a first ratio during the first time interval;

and wherein, during a second time interval occurring after the first time interval, the injecting of the oxidant and the injecting of the steam is effected simultaneously, and the ratio of the molar rate of injection of the oxidant to the molar rate of injection of the steam is a second ratio during the second time interval;

and wherein the second ratio is greater than the first ratio.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the injecting of the oxidant is effected via an oxidant-conducting conduit, and wherein the injecting of the steam is effected via a separate steam-conducting conduit.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein each one of the steam-conducting conduit and the oxidant-conducting conduit, independently, extends into the subterranean reservoir from the surface.

4. The method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein each one of the steam-conducting conduit and the oxidant-conducting conduit, independently, has a length of at least 400 meters.

5. The method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein both of the steam-conducting conduit and the oxidant-conducting conduit are disposed within an injection well.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the production of the mobilized bitumen is effected by a production well that includes a horizontal section that receives the mobilized bitumen by gravity drainage.

7. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising prior to the first time interval, effecting depletion of bitumen from the bitumen-comprising subterranean reservoir via a SAGD process.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7 , wherein injecting of the oxidant is effected via an oxidant-conducting conduit, and wherein the injecting of the steam is effected via a separate steam-conducting conduit, and wherein both of the oxidant-conducting conduit and the steam-conducting conduit are disposed within an injection well that is used to effect injection of steam during the SAGD process.

9. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the injected oxidant and the injected steam become mixed after having been injected to the bitumen-comprising subterranean reservoir.

10. A method of producing bitumen from a subterranean formation, comprising:

during a first time interval:

injecting steam into the subterranean formation via a steam injection well for effecting mobilization of bitumen within the subterranean formation such that mobilized bitumen drains by gravity through an interwell region to a production well, such that fluid communication is established between the injection well and the production well through a bitumen-comprising zone; and

producing the mobilized bitumen, received by the production well, via the production well;

during a second time interval occurring after the first time interval:

injecting oxidant into the bitumen-comprising zone such that combustion of bitumen of the bitumen-comprising zone is effected by the injected oxidant to produce heat, wherein the injecting of the oxidant is effected via an oxidant injection well that is separate from the steam injection well;

injecting steam into the bitumen-comprising zone;

wherein:

the injecting of the steam is such that the bitumen-comprising zone is sufficiently heated such that the combustion includes high temperature oxidation such that heat energy is produced; and

mobilization of residual bitumen of the bitumen-comprising zone is effected by the injected steam and the produced heat energy of the high temperature oxidation; and

producing the mobilized residual bitumen, received by the production well, via the production well.

11. The method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the oxidant injection well is a vertical injection well.

12. The method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the injected oxidant and the injected steam become mixed after having been injected to the bitumen-comprising subterranean reservoir.

13. The method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the production well includes a horizontal section that receives: (i) during the first time interval, the mobilized bitumen, and (ii) during the second time interval, the mobilized residual bitumen.
