Abstract

An apparatus and system are disclosed for fluid transfer. The apparatus includes a fluid nozzle having a nozzle base. A poppet is rigidly coupled with the nozzle base. The poppet includes a poppet end surface. The fluid nozzle also includes a seal ring having a seal ring end surface disposed between a pull-back collar end surface and the poppet end surface. The seal ring is movable between a first position that prevents fluid flow through the fluid nozzle, and a second position that forms an annular fluid outlet that allows fluid flow through the fluid nozzle. The fluid nozzle also includes a tubular ball ring disposed around an outer surface of the seal ring. The ball ring includes at least one opening for housing a tumbler, which is configured to engage a surface feature of a keyed receiver. The system includes a fluid receiver and the fluid nozzle.

Claims (23)

1. A fluid nozzle comprising:

a fluid inlet formed in a nozzle base;

a poppet rigidly coupled with and extending outward from the nozzle base, the poppet having a poppet end surface;

a seal ring having a seal ring end surface disposed between a pull-back collar end surface and the poppet end surface, where the seal ring is moveable between a first position that prevents fluid flow through the fluid nozzle, and a second position that forms an annular fluid outlet that allows fluid flow through the fluid nozzle;

a tubular ball ring disposed around an outer surface of the seal ring, the ball ring comprising at least one opening for housing a tumbler, where the tumbler is configured to engage a surface feature of a keyed receiver and selectively allow the seal ring to move to the second position or to maintain the seal ring in the first position in response to the at least one opening being positioned to correspond with the surface feature, and

a nose collar disposed around the ball ring, the nose collar rigidly coupled with the nozzle base, where the nose collar comprises a groove formed in an interior surface positioned to correspond with the at least one opening and engage the tumbler.

The fluid nozzle of claim 1 , where the at least one opening in the ball ring further comprises a first series of openings, each opening configured to house a tumbler, where the first series of openings are arranged in a line parallel to a direction of insertion of the fluid nozzle with respect to the keyed receiver.

3. The fluid nozzle of claim 2 , where the first series of openings is positioned a first distance from an end of the ball ring.

The fluid nozzle of claim 3 , further comprising a second series of openings, each opening configured to house a tumbler, where the second series of openings is positioned parallel to and adjacent the first series of openings, and where the second series of openings is positioned a second distance from the end of the ball ring.

5. The fluid nozzle of claim 4 , further comprising a third series of openings, each opening configured to house a tumbler, and positioned in the ball ring opposite the first series of openings, where the third series of openings is positioned the first distance from the end of the ball ring.

6. The fluid nozzle of claim 5 , further comprising a fourth series of openings, each opening configured to house a tumbler, and positioned in the ball ring opposite the second series of openings, where the fourth series of openings is positioned the second distance from the end of the ball ring.

7. The fluid nozzle of claim 6 , where each opening in the first, second, third, and fourth series of openings is either occupied by a tumbler or is vacant, and where an arrangement of occupied and vacant openings is unique to a surface profile of surface features of the keyed receiver.

8. The fluid nozzle of claim 1 , further comprising a spring disposed between the ball ring and the nozzle base.

The fluid nozzle of claim 1 , where the ball ring is locked positionally with reference to the nose collar when the surface feature of the keyed receiver pushes the tumbler outward towards the nose collar, and where the ball ring is not locked positionally with reference to the nose collar when the surface feature of the keyed receiver allows the tumbler to move inward away from the nose collar.

The fluid nozzle of claim 9 , further comprising a poppet sleeve slideably coupled around an outer surface of the poppet and configured to move from a first position blocking fluid flow through the poppet to a second position allowing fluid flow through the poppet when the ball ring is not locked positionally with reference to the nose collar and the keyed receiver applies a force to the poppet sleeve.

11. A fluid transfer system comprising:

a fluid nozzle comprising:

a base forming a fluid inlet;

a nose collar extending from the base and forming a fluid outlet, the base and nose collar forming a fluid flow path; and

a ball ring slideably disposed within the nose collar, the ball ring comprising a plurality of openings, where each of the plurality of openings is configured to maintain a tumbler or to remain vacant, and where the ball ring locks positionally with reference to the nose collar in response to one of the plurality of openings having the tumbler that is urged towards the nose collar by a surface feature of a keyed receiver;

a nose collar disposed around the ball ring, the nose collar rigidly coupled with the nozzle base, where the nose collar comprises a groove formed in an interior surface positioned to correspond with the at least one opening and engage the tumbler; and

where the keyed receiver comprises:

a tubular cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, where the tubular cylinder has a keyed outer surface that comprises the surface feature, where the surface feature extends annularly around the surface of the tubular cylinder.
